Minimising Impact: How legislation and sustainable design can reduce the environmental cost of a mobile phone

open access: yes, 2004
This paper looks at the factors involved in the environmental cost of a mobile phone handset. It initially looks at the development of mobile handsets and the trends in weight, energy consumption, use life and mobile ownership.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Frequency-Scanning Waveguide Antenna for Solar Radio Bursts Detection in the UHF Band

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation
This paper proposes a frequency-scanning antenna designed to operate in the 400 MHz to 800 MHz band for solar radio astronomy applications. It is constructed with perforated metallic walls and cylinders, that form a rectangular leaky waveguide.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

ABL kinase‐dependent phosphorylation of SH proteins promotes their direct interaction with CRK family SH2 domains

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
CT10 regulator of kinase (CRK) and CRK‐Like (CRKL) are signaling adaptors driving cell adhesion, motility, differentiation, and proliferation. SH2‐domain containing (SH) proteins are enriched in YXXP motifs which when phosphorylated create preferred binding sites for CRK family SH2 domains.

Mixed‐class J‐domain protein scaffolds promote expanded aggregate handling and multivalent Hsp70 engagement during functional disaggregase assembly

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein aggregates threaten proteostasis and cell health. In human cells, Hsp70–J‐domain protein‐based disaggregases remove aggregates, but how they assemble remains unclear. Our biochemical findings show that DNAJA2‐ and DNAJB1‐containing disaggregase scaffolds enhance luciferase aggregate targeting, and that Hsp70 recruitment by both J‐domain ...

The Economics of the Proposed European Takeover Directive. CEPS Reports in Finance and Banking No. 32, 1 April 2003 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This report provides a detailed analysis of the mandatory bid rule. It examines the implications of the rule, taking into account its ex-ante and ex-post trade-offs.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Decoding the dynamic extracellular matrix in cancer—3D models and bioscaffolds rewire the rules of tumor progression

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer progression is regulated by the dynamic matrix code of the tumor microenvironment, which influences cellular behavior and disease development. Importantly, matrix remodeling in three‐dimensional cancer models more accurately reflects in vivo conditions compared to conventional two‐dimensional systems.

Well-being and motivation of generation Y individuals in self-directive work [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This thesis researches motivation and well-being of generation Y individuals in self-directive work. Self-direction is a part of the changing working life and on the individual level self-direction refers to an individual’s ability to function ...
