Morphology and Relationship of Dirofilaria Tenuis and Dirofilaria Conjunctivae

Summary Adult and adolescent Dirofilaria tenuis Chandler, 1942, from subcutaneous tissues of raccoons (Procyon lotor) in Florida and Louisiana were described in detail and compared with 26 worms earlier identified as Dirofilaria conjunctivae (Addario, 1885) from subcutaneous tissues of man, mainly in Florida and other Southeastern States.

In the conditions of the veterinary clinic "Beethoven" in Khabarovsk, hematological and biochemical studies of the blood of dogs infected with the nematodes Dirofilaria immitis were carried out. All sick dogs showed changes in the leukocyte formula and deviations of the biochemical parameters of blood serum from the reference values.

Human infection with Dirofilaria is rare. Fewer than 100 cases have been reported in the world's literature. Among the cases reported in the United States, most of the patients have been from Florida and Louisiana. The majority of the patients had a single lesion that involved either the skin or the lung.
