Prediction of discard mortality for Alaskan crabs after exposure to freezing temperatures, based on a reflex impairment index [PDF]
Millions of crabs are sorted and discarded in freezing conditions each year in Alaskan fisheries for Tanner crab (Chionoecetes bairdi) and snow crab (C. opilio).

A pore tuning strategy to amplify the multi‐site MOF‐SO2 interactions is proposed to achieve an enhanced trace SO2 capture and chemiresistive sensing in highly stable isostructural DMOFs by annelating benzene rings. This work provides a facile strategy to achieve tailor‐made stable MOF materials for specific multifunctional applications.

How are time and materiality felt in periods of expectation, when change is awaited but never comes, at least not in the way anticipated? Disappointment may set in, but in the expanding European context in which I conducted research, something else occurs: sensory experiences of time and materiality intermingle and shape each other.

FISHRENT; Bio-economic simulation and optimisation model [PDF]
Key findings: The FISHRENT model is a major step forward in bio-economic model-ling, combining features that have not been fully integrated in earlier models: 1- Incorporation of any number of species (or stock) and/or fleets 2- Integration of simulation

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

For the first time, a highly sensitive electrochemical biosensor based on SiO2‐based hairy particles with a grafted PDMAEMA polymer brush containing a quantifiable and large amount of immobilized Laccase is reported. The fabricated biosensor exhibits a sensitivity of 0.14 A·m⁻¹, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 µm, and a detection range of 0.3–750 µm,

Discarding occurs because most methods of fishing catch more fish than the fisherman can legally land and sell. Therefore any commercial fishing activity will result in discarding of unwanted catch. Discards can be defined as that portion of the total weight of undersized, un-saleable or otherwise undesirable whole fish discarded at the time of capture

Study of the effect of a By-catch Reduction Panel in a twin-trawl on reducing plaice discards [PDF]
Comparative fishing trials were conducted in November 2008 on the euro-cutter MFV TH-7 “Adriana Maria” on fishing grounds in the North Sea to investigate the effect of By-catch Reduction Panels inserted in a twin-trawl.

Discards of the beach seine fishery in the central coast of Portugal. [PDF]
The beach seine fishery is performed regularly along the Portuguese coast in shallow water sandy areas. The catches and discards of this fishery were studied from March until November 1999, on the coast south of Lisbon.
