Acta Radiologica, 1990
The roentgenologic course of postoperative discitis is described in 111 patients examined with laminar tomography. The earliest lesion was blurring of the end plate or minor destructions, leading to cavitation of the vertebral body. Mean time from operation to the first clinical symptoms was 3 weeks. Mean time from operation to first radiologic lesions

A series of nine patients with post-discography discitis were evaluated to help delineate the clinical course. The most consistent sign was the marked exacerbation of neck or back pain. This then was followed by an elevated sedimentation rate at an average of 20 days, followed by a positive bone scan at an average of 33 days.

We analysed 13 cases of lumbar disc infection following surgical discectomy. Two groups of patients were identified. The six patients in group A reported that the initial symptoms of discitis had appeared a mean of 15 days after surgery; on average, antibiotic treatment was started 31 days following operation and continued for 62 days, and symptoms ...

Infection after intradiscal injections has been recognised as a distinct entity, but discitis after discography has often been attributed to an aseptic process or a chemical reaction to the contrast material. We examined the hypothesis that discitis after discography is always due to infection, and report a clinical review and an experimental study ...

* Discitis is a bacterial infection of the intervertebral disc that is commonly caused by direct inoculation from surgery or hematogenous seeding.* Rapid diagnosis and treatment are essential to preserve spinal stability and neurological function.* Discitis is usually treated nonoperatively with antibiotics.

Postoperative discitis (POD) continues to be a diagnostic challenge and its management remains variable. This article raises the following questions and presents new observations. What is the current role of the CT scan in POD? Is a uniform pathogen involved and is there a basis for the duration of intravenous antibiotics?

1. Thirty-five children suffering from a mild illness with narrowing of an intervertebral disc have been studied. 2. Backache was the presenting symptom in only a small proportion of children, vague aching in the legs being almost as common at the onset. 3.
