Discontinuous Optimization by Smoothing
Mathematics of Operations Research, 1981We present a simple tool for solving many discontinuous optimization problems. The basic idea is to express discontinuities by means of a step function, and then to approximate the step function by a smooth one. This way, a smooth once or twice continuously differentiable approximate problem is obtained.

The Reflection Map with Discontinuities
Mathematics of Operations Research, 2001We study the multidimensional reflection map on the spaces D([0, T], ℝk) and D([0, ∞), ℝk) of right-continuous ℝk-valued functions on [0, T] or [0, ∞) with left limits, endowed with variants of the Skorohod (1956) M1 topology. The reflection map was used with the continuous mapping theorem by Harrison and Reiman (1981) and Reiman (1984) to establish ...

Regression-Discontinuity Analysis
2008The regression discontinuity (RD) data design is a quasi-experimental evaluation design first introduced by Thistlethwaite and Campbell (1960) as an alternative approach to evaluating social programmes. The design is characterized by a treatment assignment or selection rule which involves the use of a known cut-off point with respect to a continuous ...

Discontinuity in Economic Theory and Economic Discontinuities
1991Viewing the world as fundamentally continuous contrasts sharply with viewing the world as fundamentally discontinuous. A smooth world represents the Newtonian-Victorian dream of a gradual and steady upward movement of reality through a gentle, Darwinian, evolutionary process. In economics this view was epitomized by Alfred Marshall.
