Discontinuities that arise when designing for educational improvement at state scale

open access: yesFrontiers in Education
This paper explores the tensions—or discontinuities—that arise when designing for educational improvement at scale through research-practice partnerships (RPPs).

EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL RESEARCH OF JOINTED ROCK MASS ANISOTROPY IN A THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRESS FIELD

open access: yesRudarsko-geološko-naftni Zbornik, 2022
Joints often have a significant influence on material characteristics. The discontinuities’ coalescence mechanism and complex jointed rock mass structure as a composite need to be further explored.

Optimization of the Production of Rubber Compounds Using Mathematical Models

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Rubber compounds were mixed in a batch internal mixer, and symbolic regression was used to derive mathematical models linking recipe and process parameters to ram path, torque, and mixing quality (incorporation, dispersion, distribution). Subsequent optimization with evolutionary algorithms identified operating conditions that reduce specific energy ...

Application of terrestrial laser scanning for the geometric characterization of discontinuities in limestone quarry faces

open access: yesGeodesy and Cartography
This work investigates the effect of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) configuration on measuring the geometric properties that characterize discontinuities in limestone quarry faces. While the application of laser scanning technologies to acquire the 3D

Cathodic Cage Plasma Deposition of Nanostructured Cu–Fe–Se Coatings on Poly(methyl Methacrylate)

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Nanostructured Cu–Fe–Se coatings are deposited on PMMA by a modified cathodic cage plasma process, enabling low‐temperature deposition on polymer substrates. A transition from discontinuous to compact morphology is observed with temperature, with optimal properties at 200°C, where improved CuFeSe2‐type bonding, lowest sheet resistance, and favorable ...

Discontinuous modelling of strain localisation and failure

open access: yes, 2001
The computational simulation of failure in solids poses many challenges. A proper understanding of how structures respond under loading, both before and past the peak load, is important for safe and economical constructions.

Reducing Audible Spectral Discontinuities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A common problem in diphone synthesis is discussed, viz., the occurrence of audible discontinuities at diphone boundaries. Informal observations show that spectral mismatch is the most likely the clause of this phenomenon.

Aligning Firm Capabilities and Business Environment in a Managerial Context: Evidence from the 2016 Presidential Election and Dodd-Frank Rollback

open access: yesAmerican Business Review
Studies examining firm capabilities under abrupt discontinuities are scarce. To contribute to this literature, we focus on the effect of matching firm capabilities to business environments.

Nondestructive Testing of Welded Composite Metal Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
X‐ray computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate welded steel–steel composite metal foam (CMF) joints of two density classes. It reports variation in postweld spatial void distribution and correlates it to weld‐induced changes, mechanical performance, and failure within welded CMF panels.

Strong embedded discontinuities for simulating fracture in quasi-brittle materials

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper embedded strong discontinuities are used to model discrete cracking in materials like concrete. In the approach followed a discontinuous displacement field is considered and the deformation is localized at a surface of zero width.
