Targeting the endocannabinoid system: future therapeutic strategies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is involved in many physiological regulation pathways in the human body, which makes this system the target of many drugs and therapies.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Hyper‐Local Temperature Prediction Using Detailed Urban Climate Informatics

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
The accurate modeling of urban microclimate is a challenging task given the high surface heterogeneity of urban land cover and the vertical structure of street morphology.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

The ubiquitin system, disease, and drug discovery [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Biochemistry, 2008
The ubiquitin system of protein modification has emerged as a crucial mechanism involved in the regulation of a wide array of cellular processes. As our knowledge of the pathways in this system has grown, so have the ties between the protein ubiquitin and human disease.

Price Discovery in Floor and Screen Trading Systems [PDF]

open access: yes
We analyze price discovery in floor-based and electronic exchanges using data from the German stock market. We find that both markets contribute to price discovery.

The discovery of new functional oxides using combinatorial techniques and advanced data mining algorithms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Electroceramic materials research is a wide ranging field driven by device applications. For many years, the demand for new materials was addressed largely through serial processing and analysis of samples often similar in composition to those already

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Tailoring Chronic Disease Interventions to Meet Specific Needs of Women: A Case Example of a Hypertension Program

open access: yesWomen's Health Reports
Background: Women have a unique risk profile for cardiovascular disease (CVD) due to underlying sociocultural and biological determinants. Current CVD prevention and treatment interventions, however, largely remain agnostic to the influences of an ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...
