Packaging of Macroscopic Material Payloads: Needs, Challenges, Concepts, and Future Directions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This review introduces a unified framework that decomposes any macroscopic packaging system into the payload, packaging material, and packaging strategy and combines them into a conceptual packaging equation: packaging strategy = payload + packaging material.

49 Gbit/s Direct-Modulation and Direct-Detection Transmission over 80 km SMF-28 without Optical Amplification or Filtering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We demonstrate direct-modulation of a discrete mode laser using Discrete Multi-Tone modulation for transmission distances up to 100 km in the 1550 nm band.

Log-periodic corrections to scaling: exact results for aperiodic Ising quantum chains

open access: yes, 1996
Log-periodic amplitudes of the surface magnetization are calculated analytically for two Ising quantum chains with aperiodic modulations of the couplings. The oscillating behaviour is linked to the discrete scale invariance of the perturbations.

Correcting Charge-Constrained Errors in the Rank-Modulation Scheme [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We investigate error-correcting codes for a the rank-modulation scheme with an application to flash memory devices. In this scheme, a set of n cells stores information in the permutation induced by the different charge levels of the individual cells.

Unconditional security proof of long-distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution with discrete modulation. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2008
We present a continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol combining a discrete modulation and reverse reconciliation. This protocol is proven unconditionally secure and allows the distribution of secret keys over long distances, thanks to a ...

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Cantilever dynamics in amplitude modulation AFM: continuous and discontinuous transitions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Transitions between the attractive and the repulsive force regimes for amplitude modulation atomic force microscopy (AFM) can be either discontinuous, with a corresponding jump in amplitude and phase, or continuous and smooth.

Bioinspired Shape‐Memory Hook Fasteners With Programmable Interlocking and Silent Release

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Bioinspired hook fasteners made from epoxy shape‐memory polymers are shown to switch between strong, secure attachment and gentle, silent release when heated. By combining programmable geometry and material response, these adaptive fasteners outperform commercial systems in strength and noise control, enabling new solutions for robotics, medical ...

Peak-to-Average Power Ratio Reduction of OTFS Based on Precoding DFT-Spread

open access: yesIEEE Access
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation can effectively combat the multipath and Doppler effects in doubly-selective channels, making it suitable for high-speed mobility scenarios.

Noise optimized eigenfilter design of time-domain equalizers for DMT systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The design of time-domain equalizers or TEQs for discrete multitone modulation (DMT) systems has recently received much attention. In this paper, we present a generalization of one such design method which takes into account the noise observed in a DMT ...
