On the use of bilevel programming for solving a structural optimization problem with discrete variables

open access: yes, 2006
In this paper, a bilevel formulation of a structural optimization problem with discrete variables is investigated. The bilevel programming problem is transformed into a Mathematical Program with Equilibrium (or Complementarity) Constraints (MPEC) by ...

Inverse Identification of Energy‐Dependent Laser Absorptivity in NiTi Laser Powder‐Bed Fusion via Calibrated Melt Pool Simulation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined experimental–computational framework identifies energy‐dependent laser absorptivity for NiTi in laser powder‐bed fusion, applicable to conduction and transition modes. Single‐track experiments and thermofluid smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations are coupled through inverse analysis of melt pool geometry.

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Effect of Approximations of the Discrete Adjoint on Gradient-Based Optimization

open access: yes, 2006
An exact discrete adjoint of an unstructured nite-volume solver for the RANS equations has been developed. The adjoint is exact in the sense of being based on the full linearization of all terms in the solver, including all turbulence model ...

Mixed-discrete structural optimization using a rank-niche evolution strategy

open access: yes, 2014
In this study, the evolution strategy, which is one of the evolutionary algorithms, is modified to solve mixed-discrete optimization problems. Three approaches are proposed for handling discrete variables.

A Quantum-Inspired Predator–Prey Algorithm for Real-Parameter Optimization

open access: yesAlgorithms
Quantum computing has opened up various opportunities for the enhancement of computational power in the coming decades. We can design algorithms inspired by the principles of quantum computing, without implementing in quantum computing infrastructure. In

IN4MER Biomaterial Ink: A Phosphorescent Biosensing Biomaterial Ink for Multiple Analytes (Glucose, Lactate, Oxygen) Measurements and Temperature Sensing Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Multianalyte, real‐time monitoring of bioprinted scaffolds remains challenging. Phosphorescence‐lifetime–based, optically responsive microparticles are embedded in diverse printable hydrogels (κ‐carrageenan, GelMA, PEGDA) to form biomaterial inks that report oxygen, glucose, lactate, and temperature.

Optimal Operation of Combined Heat and Power System Based on Forecasted Energy Prices in Real-Time Markets

open access: yesEnergies, 2015
This paper develops a discrete operation optimization model for combined heat and powers (CHPs) in deregulated energy markets to maximize owners’ profits, where energy price forecasting is included. First, a single input and multi-output (SIMO) model for

Mechanical Behavior and Fracture Mechanisms of MXene/PVDF Nanocomponsites: In Situ Characterization and Multiscale Analysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Multiscale experiments and modeling reveal how Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets reinforce PVDF nanocomposites. An optimal MXene loading (∼1 wt.%) nearly doubles tensile strength through efficient stress transfer, flake alignment, and crack‐deflection mechanisms, transforming ductile polymer behavior into a controlled multi‐stage fracture pathway which aligns ...
