What Do People Want From a Welfare System? Conjoint Survey Evidence From UK Adults

open access: yesPoverty &Public Policy, Volume 17, Issue 2, June 2025.
ABSTRACT What do people want from a welfare system? Previous research has suggested a list of desiderata, such as that the system: reduces poverty; reduces inequality; improves mental and physical health; costs little; and rewards only the deserving. How do these different features trade off against one another to determine overall desirability?

New methodology for calibration of hydrodynamic models in curved open-channel flow

Exploring the Effect of Plain Terminology on Processing and Comprehension of Administrative Texts in Spanish: A Self‐Paced Reading Experiment

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 659-671, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Clear communication between government administrations and citizens is a challenge in democratic societies. Public administration texts often contain technical legal terms, essential to convey specialized knowledge with precision but often impenetrable to non‐experts.

The potential of gardening and other plant‐related interventions to reduce symptoms of depression: A systematic review of non‐randomized controlled trials and uncontrolled studies

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 1, Page 295-316, January 2025.
Abstract Previous systematic reviews have examined the effect of horticultural interventions (e.g., taking care of plants, planting, gardening) on individuals' depressive symptoms through analyses focused exclusively on randomized controlled trials, but that approach overlooks a majority of the potentially informative published research.

Simulating drifting fish aggregating device trajectories to identify potential interactions with endangered sea turtles

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 6, December 2024.
Abstract Purse‐seine fishers using drifting fish aggregating devices (dFADs), mainly built with bamboo, plastic buoys, and plastic netting, to aggregate and catch tropical tuna, deploy 46,000–65,000 dFADs per year in the Pacific Ocean. Some of the major concerns associated with this widespread fishing device are potential entanglement of sea turtles ...

Clustered and rotating designs as a strategy to obtain precise detection rates in camera trapping studies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 7, Page 1649-1661, July 2024.
Our research provides a guideline for wildlife managers and researchers to improve the precision of camera trap detection rates and optimize resource allocation. In general, the study design should accommodate the behaviour of the target species (e.g.

Recruitment limitation of early‐ and late‐flowering grassland forbs can be overcome with transplanting in prairie restorations

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 2, Page 223-235, February 2024.
Our results indicate that early‐ and late‐flowering species are more recruitment limited than seed limited and that diversity is lower when these species are missing in restorations. We recommend transplanting a rich mix of early‐ and late‐flowering forbs to increase their biomass and ensure that flowering occurs throughout the growing season. Abstract

Four principles for improved statistical ecology

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 2, Page 266-281, February 2024.
Abstract Increasing attention has been drawn to the misuse of statistical methods over recent years, with particular concern about the prevalence of practices such as poor experimental design, cherry picking and inadequate reporting. These failures are largely unintentional and no more common in ecology than in other scientific disciplines, with many ...
