Generic protease detection technology for monitoring periodontal disease

open access: yes, 2011
Periodontal diseases are inflammatory conditions that affect the supporting tissues of teeth and can lead to destruction of the bone support and ultimately tooth loss if untreated.

Redox‐dependent binding and conformational equilibria govern the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this work, we reveal how different enzyme binding configurations influence the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in live cells using time‐resolved anisotropy imaging and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Mathematical modelling shows that the redox states of the NAD and NADP pools govern these configurations, shaping their fluorescence ...

Dietary inflammatory index is associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease among United States adults

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
BackgroundMetabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is presently the most prevalent chronic liver disorder globally that is closely linked to obesity, dyslipidemia metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Variants in the SNCA Locus Are Associated With the Progression of Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2019
Background: Genetic factors have a well-known influence on Parkinson's disease (PD) susceptibility; however, no previous studies have investigated the influence of SNCA mutations on the natural history of PD using a prospective follow-up study.

Treatment of dogs with compensated myxomatous mitral valve disease with spironolactone-a pilot study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Spironolactone improves outcome in dogs with advanced myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Its efficacy in preclinical MMVD is unknown. The hypothesis was the administration of spironolactone to dogs with compensated MMVD demonstrating risk factors ...

Neutrophil deficiency increases T cell numbers at the site of tissue injury in mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In wild‐type mice, injury or acute inflammation induces neutrophil influx followed by macrophage accumulation. Mcl1ΔMyelo (neutrophil‐deficient) mice lack neutrophils, and in response to muscle injury show fewer macrophages and exhibit strikingly elevated T‐cell numbers, primarily non‐conventional “double‐negative” (DN) αβ and γδ T cells.

Early Detection of Disease Progression in Metastatic Cancers: Could CTCs Improve RECIST Criteria?

open access: yesBiomedicines
Early detection of disease progression is a crucial issue in the management of cancer patients, especially in metastatic settings. Currently, treatment selection mostly relies on criteria based on radiologic evaluations (RECIST).

Toward Cultural Oncology: The Evolutionary Information Dynamics of Cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
'Racial' disparities among cancers, particularly of the breast and prostate, are something of a mystery. For the US, in the face of slavery and its sequelae, centuries of interbreeding have greatly leavened genetic differences between 'Blacks' and ...

C‐mannosylation promotes ADAMTS1 activation and secretion in human testicular germ cell tumor NEC8 cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
C‐mannosylation is a unique form of protein glycosylation. In this study, we demonstrated that ADAMTS1 is C‐mannosylated at Trp562 and Trp565 in human testicular germ cell tumor NEC8 cells. We found that C‐mannosylation of ADAMTS1 is essential for its secretion, processing, enzymatic activity, and ability to promote vasculogenic mimicry. These findings
