2002Leishmaniasis is a group of diseases caused by infection with intracellular protozoa of the family Trypanosomatidae, genus Leishmania Ross, 1903, which are transmitted to the host by phlebotomine sand flies. One subset, human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by parasites of the L. donovani complex.
