Symptoms of major depression: Their stability, familiality, and prediction by genetic, temperamental, and childhood environmental risk factors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Psychiatry has long sought to develop biological diagnostic subtypes based on symptomatic differences. This effort assumes that symptoms reflect, with good fidelity, underlying etiological processes.

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Digital twins in dermatology, current status, and the road ahead

open access: yesnpj Digital Medicine
Digital twins, innovative virtual models synthesizing real-time biological, environmental, and lifestyle data, herald a new era in personalized medicine, particularly dermatology. These models, integrating medical-purpose Internet of Things (IoT) devices,

Twin Studies in Metabolic Diseases

open access: yesAnnals of Medicine, 1992
The traditional role of twin studies has been to assess the relative role of genetic factors as a first step in defining the genetic architecture of complex traits. This has been based on the realization that monozygotic pairs (MZ) share all their genes, while dizygotic pairs (DZ) share 50% of their genes on average.

Circulating tumor cells: advancing personalized therapy in small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer that spreads rapidly to secondary sites such as the brain and liver. Cancer cells circulating in the blood, “circulating tumor cells” (CTCs), have demonstrated prognostic value in SCLC, and evaluating biomarkers on CTCs could guide treatment decisions such as for PARP inhibitors ...

Diet and bone mineral density study in postmenopausal women from the TwinsUK registry shows a negative association with a traditional English dietary pattern and a positive association with wine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: The effect of diet on bone mineral density (BMD) remains controversial, mainly because of difficulties in isolating dietary factors from the confounding influences of age, lifestyle, and genetic factors.

A Robust and Unified Framework for Estimating Heritability in Twin Studies using Generalized Estimating Equations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
The development of a complex disease is an intricate interplay of genetic and environmental factors. "Heritability" is defined as the proportion of total trait variance due to genetic factors within a given population. Studies with monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins allow us to estimate heritability by fitting an "ACE" model which estimates the ...

A comparative study of circulating tumor cell isolation and enumeration technologies in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Lung cancer cells were spiked into donor blood to evaluate the recovery rates of the following circulating tumor cell (CTC) enrichment technologies: CellMag™, EasySep™, RosetteSep™, Parsortix® PR1, and Parsortix® Prototype systems. Each method's advantages and disadvantages are described.

Personalized Heart Disease Detection via ECG Digital Twin Generation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Heart diseases rank among the leading causes of global mortality, demonstrating a crucial need for early diagnosis and intervention. Most traditional electrocardiogram (ECG) based automated diagnosis methods are trained at population level, neglecting the customization of personalized ECGs to enhance individual healthcare management.
