A 10-year-old twin girl presented elsewhere with weight gain and growth retardation. At age 14 years she was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease, and transsphenoidal pituitary tumour resection was attempted without improvement. She presented to the National Institutes of Health at age 15 years with cerebral MRI showing persistent tumour.

AbstractMoyamoya disease is a progressive disease which involves the internal carotid arteries and its branches bilaterally. The disease is reported both in adults and in children. Moyamoya disease is frequently seen in Japanese patients having certain human leucocyte antigen (HLA) haplotypes including HLA‐Aw24, Bw46 and Bw54.

Among nine monozygotic (MZ) and 12 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs in which an index case had typical Parkinson's disease (PD) or PD with associated dementia, three MZ and three DZ pairs were concordant. Three of the six affected co-twins were first diagnosed during the study.

To the Editor: Some years ago I was asked by an asymptomatic cotwin of a patient with PD whether an [18F]dopa PET scan could predict whether he would develop the illness. Vieregge et al.’s article1 is the second recent study examining the progress of asymptomatic twins identified as having abnormal, and putatively presymptomatic, scans. The editor and

Twins With Alzheimer's Disease
Archives of Neurology, 1981Twins of identical appearance were both affected by Alzheimer's senile dementia. In one, dementia began in her late 60s. She died at age 74. In the other, onset was at age 83. She died of ovarian carcinoma at age 85. The histopathologic findings of Alzheimer's disease were confirmed in both twin sisters.

Alzheimer's disease in Finnish twins
The Lancet, 1996The genetics of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are obscure. Although most cases are sporadic half the patients with sporadic AD have a positive family history. The mode of genetic transmission and the role of environmental factors are unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of genetic factors to the pathogenesis of AD in a twin ...

Parkinson's disease in monozygotic twins
Annals of Neurology, 1986AbstractRecent studies of twins have demonstrated an unexpectedly low concordance of Parkinson's disease in monozygotic twins. Only two monozygotic twin pairs concordant for it have been reported. However, both pairs were atypical because of an early age at onset and other unusual features.

Eighteen pairs of twins who were registered in the Twin Registry files of the National Research Council with the diagnoses of psoriasis or atopic dermatitis were questioned and examined. Of these pairs, ten had psoriasis, four had atopic dermatitis, and four were found to have neither of the foregoing, but to have other skin diseases.

Smoking and Parkinson’s disease in twins
Neurology, 2002To test the hypothesis that cigarette smoking protects against the development of PD.Smoking has been inversely associated with PD in many studies, but whether this reflects a biologic effect on the underlying disease process or merely confounding or selection bias remains uncertain. The authors compared smoking histories in male twin pairs identified ...
