The Relative Contributions of Arousal Presence and Arousal Intensity to Post‐Respiratory‐Event Ventilation in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
In obstructive sleep apnea, the breathing after each obstructive event is affected by cortical arousal. Across two cohorts (N = 1781 and N = 67), arousal presence raised post‐event ventilation by 17–30%Eupnea, with each intensity step adding 1–4%Eupnea, independent of chemoreflex drive.

A Multimodal Machine Learning Model for Framingham Risk Score–Based Cardiovascular Risk Stratification in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Machine learning provides a powerful tool to capture complex, nonlinear patterns in biomedical data and enhance precision risk stratification. In this study, we applied a multilayer perceptron (MLP) framework to classify Framingham Risk Score–based cardiovascular risk categories in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Differences in Sleep Spindle Characteristics Between Children With Narcolepsy and Those With Other Causes of Subjective Sleepiness

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Central disorders of hypersomnolence are characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness. There has been growing interest in analysing sleep micro‐architecture, to further understand how sleep is affected by these conditions. We investigated if sleep spindle activity differed between children with narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnolence (IH) and ...

Risk Factors for Motor Vehicle Accidents in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Patients With Long‐Term Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this study, we aim to establish risk factors for sleepiness while driving, motor‐vehicle accidents and near miss incidents in obstructive sleep apnoea patients with long‐term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. We performed a cross‐sectional study on 1327 consecutive CPAP‐treated obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients who ...

Does Hypoxic Burden Better Explain Sex Differences in Functional Impairments Than Apnoea‐Hypopnoea Index in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Women with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) report more severe functional impairments than men, despite lower apnoea‐hypopnoea index (AHI) values. This raises questions about the adequacy of AHI for capturing OSA severity. We explored sex differences in functional outcomes in OSA patients and examined whether AHI or hypoxic burden (HB) better ...
