Disparity Estimation Techniques

open access: yes, 2013
Disparity information has a great interest in different application fields such as view synthesis, 3D reconstruction and stereo/multiview video coding. For this reason, many research studies have been focused on the estimation of a consistent disparity map. This chapter deals with this estimation problem and it is divided into three main parts.

Enhanced disparity estimation in stereo images

Image and Vision Computing, 2015
This paper presents a novel stereo disparity estimation method, which combines three different cost metrics, defined using RGB information, the CENSUS transform, as well as Scale-Invariant Feature Transform coefficients. The selected cost metrics are aggregated based on an adaptive weight approach, in order to calculate their corresponding cost volumes.

Hierarchical disparity estimation with energy-based regularization

open access: yesProceedings 2003 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. No.03CH37429), 2004
In this paper, we propose a hierarchical disparity estimation algorithm with energy-based regularization. Initial disparity vectors are obtained from downsampled stereo images using a feature-based region-dividing disparity estimation technique. Dense disparities are estimated from these initial vectors with shape-adaptive windows in full resolution ...

Dense disparity estimation with a divide-and-conquer disparity space image technique

IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, 1999
A new divide-and-conquer technique for disparity estimation is proposed in this paper. This technique performs feature matching following the high confidence first principle, starting with the strongest feature point in the stereo pair of scanlines. Once the first matching pair is established, the ordering constraint in disparity estimation allows the ...

DESA: Disparity Estimation With Surface Awareness

IEEE Signal Processing Letters, 2021
Depth map plays an important role in our daily life including automatic driving, intelligent robots, and commercial manufacture. However, existing depth estimation methods are still facing some difficulties in real-life applications. Firstly, using merely point-wise metrics during training usually causes surface distortion due to the lack of geometric ...

Disparity estimation and disparity-coherent watermarking

SPIE Proceedings, 2015
In the context of stereo video, disparity-coherent watermarking has been introduced to provide superior robustness against virtual view synthesis, as well as to improve perceived fidelity. Still, a number of practical considerations have been overlooked and in particular the role of the underlying depth estimation tool on performances. In this article,
