Assembly processes underlying bacterial community differentiation among geographically close mangrove forests

open access: yesmLife, 2023
Bacterial communities play pivotal roles in nutrient cycling in mangrove forests. The assembly of mangrove microbial communities has been found to be influenced by complex factors, such as geographic distance, physicochemical conditions, and plant ...

Annual rainfall variation and dispersal limitation combine to alter invaded plant community diversity, dominance hierarchies and seeding phenology

open access: yesClimate Change Ecology, 2021
Natural ecosystems are threatened by climate change, fragmentation, and non-native species. Dispersal-limitation potentially compounds impacts of these factors on plant diversity, especially in isolated vegetation patches.

Spatial Variation in Soil Fungal Communities across Paddy Fields in Subtropical China

open access: yesmSystems, 2020
Fungi underpin almost all terrestrial ecosystem functions, yet our understanding of their community ecology lags far behind that of other organisms. Here, red paddy soils in subtropical China were collected across a soil depth profile, comprising 0-to-10-

The Limitations of 5f Delocalization and Dispersion

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Delocalization in the 5f states of the actinides is an important phenomenon, but poorly quantified. Here, the fundamental limitations of 5f dispersion measurements using angle and momentum resolved variants of photoelectron spectroscopy will be discussed.

LIMITED DISPERSAL, BUDDING DISPERSAL, AND COOPERATION: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

open access: yesEvolution, 2009
Numerous theoretical studies have investigated how limited dispersal may provide an explanation for the evolution of cooperation, by leading to interactions between relatives. However, despite considerable theoretical attention, there has been a lack of empirical tests.

ON MODIFIED DISPERSION RELATIONS AND THE CHANDRASEKHAR MASS LIMIT [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Modern Physics D, 2009
Modified dispersion relations from effective field theory are shown to alter the Chandrasekhar mass limit. At exceptionally high densities, the modifications affect the pressure of a degenerate electron gas and can increase or decrease the mass limit, depending on the sign of the modifications.

Dispersal and fire limit Arctic shrub expansion [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Abstract Arctic shrub expansion alters carbon budgets, albedo, and warming rates in high latitudes but remains challenging to predict due to unclear underlying controls. Observational studies and models typically use relationships between observed shrub presence and current environmental suitability (bioclimate and topography) to ...

Limited Predator-Induced Dispersal in Whiteflies

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Whereas prey are known to avoid habitats with their predators, it is less well established whether they are triggered to emigrate to new habitats when exposed to predators in their current habitat. We studied plant-to-plant dispersal of adult whiteflies in response to the presence of predatory mites on the plant on which the whiteflies were released ...

A dispersal‐limited sampling theory for species and alleles [PDF]

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2005
The importance of dispersal for biodiversity has long been recognized. However, it was never advertised as vigorously as Stephen Hubbell did in the context of his neutral community theory. After his book appeared in 2001, several scientists have sought and found analytical expressions for the effect of dispersal limitation on community composition ...
