A dissecting competition for medical students
Anatomical Sciences Education, 2011AbstractAfter repeated requests from medical students for more cadaver dissection opportunities, a voluntary dissecting “competition” was initiated for the third year medical students in 2006. This has been held annually on five occasions since, offering up to 30 dissection stations and accommodating an average of 53 students (range 40–66) per year ...

The Medical Treatment of Dissecting Aortic Aneurysms
New England Journal of Medicine, 1972Abstract Medical treatment of a group of 33 patients with dissecting aortic aneurysms resulted in 17 survivors (52 per cent) with a mean follow-up period of 43 months. In-hospital survival was influenced favorably by the presence of a subacute or chronic dissection (onset of symptoms 14 days or longer before presentation for treatment) although long ...

Aortic dissection: medical, interventional and surgical management
Heart, 2016### Learning objectives After reading this article, the readers should be able to: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a relatively rare but much-feared clinical presentation which has a high mortality, particularly if definitive treatment is delayed. A combination of aortic wall stress and abnormalities of the medial layer of the aortic wall leads to ...

Medical Treatment in Chronic Aortic Dissection
2014Acute aortic syndrome (AAS) is a life-threatening disease which includes classic acute aortic dissection, intramural haematoma and penetrating atherosclerotic aortic ulcer (trauma of the aorta may also be considered) sharing common physiopathological mechanisms (disruption of media), clinical characteristics and therapeutic challenges [1, 2].

Acute medical management of aortic dissection
General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2018Acute aortic dissection is a life-threatening disease. Current therapeutic guidelines recommend medical therapy with aggressive blood pressure lowering for patients with acute aortic dissection, when they are not indicated for emergency surgery. In particular, patients with aortic dissection without ascending aorta involvement (Stanford type B) are ...

Attitudes of medical and dental students to dissection
Clinical Anatomy, 2003AbstractGuy's, King's, and St. Thomas's School of Medicine encourages students to learn anatomy from human dissection. Today, there is a worldwide move of anatomy‐based teaching away from dissection to prosection. This study investigates how attitudes toward dissection vary with gender and ethnicity.

Medical vs Surgical Treatment of Acute Dissecting Aneurysms
Archives of Surgery, 1971Forty-five patients had acute aortic dissecting aneurysms. Ten patients were treated symptomatically with 10% survival rate and 13 patients were treated medically with trimethaphan camsylat, reserpine, and guanethidine sulfate with four survivors (30%). Twenty-two patients were treated surgically.

What do medical students learn from dissection?
Anatomical Sciences Education, 2017Dissection has long been the accepted method for teaching anatomy to medical students. More recently, some educators have suggested that easier, cheaper, alternative methods are just as effective. But what do the students think? This paper aimed to identify what undergraduate medical students learn, how they cope, and what effects participating in ...

Aortic dissection: a medical perspective.
Journal of cardiac surgery, 1995Over the past 3 years, a greater understanding of predisposing factors and the pathology of the aortic wall has yielded more insights into the pathogenesis, as well as into more accurate diagnostic and preventive methods. This update will discuss: (1) the incidence, definition, and recent classification of aortic dissection; (2) epidemiology, medical ...

Pulmonary artery dissection and conservative medical management
International Journal of Cardiology, 2007Pulmonary artery dissection is a rare clinical entity, which has been related to pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is frequently presented as cardiogenic shock or sudden death, so diagnosis is often made at autopsy. The management with best results is surgery.
