Presence and patterns of alkaline phosphatase activity and phosphorus cycling in natural riparian zones under changing nutrient conditions

open access: yesJournal of Limnology, 2014
Phosphorus (P) is an important limiting nutrient in aquatic ecosystems and knowledge of P cycling is fundamental for reducing harmful algae blooms and other negative effects in water.

Excretion of Dissolved Organic Phosphorus in Tropical Brackish Waters

open access: yesEstuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 1981
Dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) release was measured on natural populations of a brackish lagoon in Ivory Coast (West Africa). DOP mean excretion is 8% of net phosphorus absorption, and represents 1·7% h −1 of the biomass. Only 28% of biomass is involved in rapid uptake and excretion. Release of P is inversely proportional to the C p :N p ratio of

Spring thaw ionic pulses boost nutrient availability and microbial growth in entombed Antarctic Dry Valley cryoconite holes

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2014
The seasonal melting of ice entombed cryoconite holes on McMurdo Dry Valley glaciers provides oases for life in the harsh environmental conditions of the polar desert where surface air temperatures only occasionally exceed 0°C during the Austral summer ...

Characterization of the rate and temperature sensitivities of bacterial remineralization of dissolved organic phosphorus by natural populations

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2012
Production, transformation, and degradation are the principal components of the cycling of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in marine systems. Heterotrophic Bacteria (and Archaea) play a large part in this cycling via enzymatic decomposition and ...

Biogeochemical cycling and phyto- and bacterioplankton communities in a large and shallow tropical lagoon (Términos Lagoon, Mexico) under 2009–2010 El Niño Modoki drought conditions [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2017
The 2009–2010 period was marked by an episode of intense drought known as the El Niño Modoki event. Sampling of the Términos Lagoon (Mexico) was carried out in November 2009 in order to understand the influence of these particular environmental ...

Localization of the organic matter production and degradation in two different estuaries [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2021
Physical and chemical processes related to primary production of the estuaries of two rivers with different water regime are considered with special attention to their spatial and seasonal variability.

Seasonal cycling of phosphorus in the Southern Bight of the North Sea [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2005
We have investigated the seasonal cycle of nutrients, chlorophyll a, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC) for 10 stations in the Belgian coastal zone.

MESMO global model output for glacial simulations with dynamic C:N:P ratios [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Dataset: MESMO glacial CNPModel outputs archived have a complete suite of biogeochemical state variables in the 3D global ocean domain. They include temperature, salinity, nutrients (PO4, NO3, Fe, Si), carbon pools and their isotopes (DIC, DOC, POC, 13C ...

Salinization alters fluxes of bioreactive elements from stream ecosystems across land use [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2015
There has been increased salinization of fresh water over decades due to the use of road salt deicers, wastewater discharges, saltwater intrusion, human-accelerated weathering, and groundwater irrigation.

Iron limitation of microbial phosphorus acquisition in the tropical North Atlantic

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
The influence iron exerts over the acquisition of dissolved organic phosphorus in regions of the oceans co-limited by nitrogen and phosphorus is poorly constrained.
