Distributional Measures of Semantic Distance: A Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The ability to mimic human notions of semantic distance has widespread applications. Some measures rely only on raw text (distributional measures) and some rely on knowledge sources such as WordNet.

Measures of lexical distance between languages

open access: yes, 2009
The idea of measuring distance between languages seems to have its roots in the work of the French explorer Dumont D'Urville \cite{Urv}. He collected comparative words lists of various languages during his voyages aboard the Astrolabe from 1826 to 1829 ...

Distance measures for tumor evolutionary trees

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2019
In recent years, there has been increased interest in studying cancer by using algorithmic methods to infer the evolutionary tree underlying a tumor’s developmental history.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Tales of the Wakeby Tail and Alternatives When Modelling Extreme Floods

open access: yesRevstat Statistical Journal
Estimation of return levels, based on extreme-value distributions, is of importance in the earth and environmental sciences. The selection of an appropriate probability distribution is crucial.

Response of distance measures to the equation of state

open access: yes, 2003
We show that the distance measures (such as the luminosity and angular diameter distances) are linear functionals of the equation-of-state function w(z) of the dark energy to a fair degree of accuracy in the regimes of interest.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Measures Matter: Scales for Adaptation, Cultural Distance, and Acculturation Orientation Revisited [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Building upon existing measures, four new brief acculturation scales are presented, measuring sociocultural adaptation, psychological adaptation, perceived cultural distance, and acculturation orientation.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Detecting independence of random vectors: generalized distance covariance and Gaussian covariance

open access: yes, 2018
Distance covariance is a quantity to measure the dependence of two random vectors. We show that the original concept introduced and developed by Sz\'{e}kely, Rizzo and Bakirov can be embedded into a more general framework based on symmetric L\'{e}vy ...
