Fundamentals of Distance Protection

2008 61st Annual Conference for Protective Relay Engineers, 2008
In this paper we have reviewed some basic principles of distance protection. This includes fundamentals of measuring distance to fault based on electrical signals from one end of the circuit; the principles of amplitude and phase comparators to implement a distance relay; and various technologies used to build distance relays.

Ultra fast distance protection

10th IET International Conference on Developments in Power System Protection (DPSP 2010). Managing the Change, 2010
The chief advantage that the distance relay has over current-only based line protection schemes is its ability to provide a defined zone of protection without the need for a communications channel a so-called direct tripping, under-reaching zone. This zone must operate for faults within its zone of coverage with no appreciable time delay and restrain ...

Earth fault distance protection

IET Conference Publications, 2009
Earth fault distance protection with distance protection relays is common practice in solidly grounded networks. However, in compensated networks earth faults can cause big problems, because they do not extinguish themselves. To find the fault point is from high interest also in combination with network expansion. In previous investigations the authors

Transients in distance protection

Proceedings of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1963
The demand for high-speed operation in distance protection involves design consideration under three main headings, namely: the transient primary current and voltage at the relaying point; the modification of these signals due to secondary circuits; and the effect of the modified secondary signals on two input comparators currently or prospectively ...

Charging Current Compensation for Distance Protection

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2005
When a distance relay is applied to a long transmission line, the capacitance of the transmission line causes oscillation of the distance measurement, although the exact nature of the phenomenon has never been clearly defined. Our research has shown that the degree of oscillation can be reduced significantly by introducing charging current to the ...

Distance Protection Based on Traveling Waves

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1983
A technique is presented for rapid measurement of the distance to a fault using fault initiated travelling waves. The measurement uses the time it takes a given surge to travel from the relaying point to the fault and back. A correlation technique is used to recognise the surge returning from the fault and distinguish it from other surges present on ...

Distance protection and voltage stability

PowerCon 2000. 2000 International Conference on Power System Technology. Proceedings (Cat. No.00EX409), 2002
In this paper the influence of zone 3 distance relays in the case of voltage instability is examined. Different types of relay characteristics are analysed. An adaptive algorithm to prevent undesirable zone 3 operations during voltage instability is proposed. Studies are based on simulations in a fifteen bus system developed by the authors. Data on the

Error insensitive distance protection

European Transactions on Electrical Power, 1992
AbstractThis paper shows that no algorithm exists so far with an optimal behaviour to all non‐ideal input signals. Furthermore, it is not possible to combine an algorithm solving differential equations and a filtering algorithm to achieve an error insensitive behaviour. However, the combination of different algorithms results in an improved behaviour.
