Epigenetic heterogeneity and plasticity in therapy‐induced tumor states through single‐cell multi‐omics

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Single‐cell multi‐omics reveals epigenetic heterogeneity across therapy‐adaptive tumor states, including quiescent/dormant, drug‐tolerant persister, and EMT‐like phenotypes. By linking regulatory features with state‐associated biomarkers, these approaches inform biomarker‐guided therapeutic strategies for evolving tumors.

Distributed Continual Learning

open access: yesCoRR
This work studies the intersection of continual and federated learning, in which independent agents face unique tasks in their environments and incrementally develop and share knowledge. We introduce a mathematical framework capturing the essential aspects of distributed continual learning, including agent model and statistical heterogeneity, continual

Applicability of mitotic figure counting by deep learning: a development and pan‐cancer validation study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we developed a deep learning method for mitotic figure counting in H&E‐stained whole‐slide images and evaluated its prognostic impact in 13 external validation cohorts from seven different cancer types. Patients with more mitotic figures per mm2 had significantly worse patient outcome in all the studied cancer types except colorectal ...

Research in place: the critical role of rural health research in Canada

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
People in rural communities often experience different access to healthcare and services, which can lead to poorer health outcomes compared to their urban counterparts. This holds true across the international context, though our focus here is on Canada.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

The power of metaphor in medical education: fostering shared understanding in complex conversations

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
Effective communication in medical education, particularly around complex or emotionally charged topics, remains a significant challenge. While numerous feedback frameworks exist, less attention has been paid to optimizing fundamental linguistic tools ...

Weight exchange in distributed learning

open access: yes2016 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN), 2016
Neural networks may allow different organisations to extract knowledge from the data they collect about a similar problem domain. Moreover learning algorithms usually benefit from being able to use more training instances. But the parties owning the data are not always keen on sharing it.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...
