We present a sensor model comprised of a Timoshenko beam coupled with a linear viscoelastic substrate via a distributed system of compliant elements. The system of governing equations includes the evolution of the kinematic descriptors of the Timoshenko ...

Investigation of the complex dynamics and regime control in Pierce diode with the delay feedback
In this paper the dynamics of Pierce diode with overcritical current under the influence of delay feedback is investigated. The system without feedback demonstrates complex behaviour including chaotic regimes.

Screening for lung cancer: A systematic review of overdiagnosis and its implications
Low‐dose computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer may increase overdiagnosis compared to no screening, though the risk is likely low versus chest X‐ray. Our review of 8 trials (84 660 participants) shows added costs. Further research with strict adherence to modern nodule management strategies may help determine the extent to which ...

Optimization and parameter sizing of nuclear-battery hybrid system for distributed power source
Nuclear hybrid energy system (NHES) composed of micro modular reactor (MMR) and energy storage system (ESS) has promising applications in distributed power sources like islands or remote regions. In this article, to fulfill a typical dynamic power demand

A distributed fault-detection and diagnosis system using on-line parameter estimation [PDF]
The development of a model-based fault-detection and diagnosis system (FDD) is reviewed. The system can be used as an integral part of an intelligent control system.

Survivin and Aurora Kinase A control cell fate decisions during mitosis
Aurora A interacts with survivin during mitosis and regulates its centromeric role. Loss of Aurora A activity mislocalises survivin, the CPC and BubR1, leading to disruption of the spindle checkpoint and triggering premature mitotic exit, which we refer to as ‘mitotic slippage’.

CDK11 inhibition stabilises the tumour suppressor p53 and triggers the production of an alternative p21WAF1 splice variant p21L, through the inactivation of the spliceosomal protein SF3B1. Unlike the canonical p21WAF1 protein, p21L is localised in the cytoplasm and has reduced cell cycle‐blocking activity.

Optimum Design in Distributed Parameter Systems
Abstract A new numerical method for the computation of sensitivity of design performance functional with respect to boundary variations is used to study the optimum design problems in general distributed parameter systems. The method is based on a modification of schemes in functional derivative sensitivity analysis and includes a specialization of ...
