As is well known from pioneering work of H. Weyl, the sequence \((n^2x)_{n\geq 1}\) is equidistributed \(\text{mod\,}1\) if \(x\) is irrational. This means that for every piecewise smooth function \(\psi: \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}\to \mathbb{C}\) we have \[ {1\over N} \sum^N_{n=1} \psi(n^2 x)- \int^1_0\psi(t)\,dt\to 0\tag{1} \] as \(N\to\infty\).
