The Two Effects of District Magnitude: Venezuela as a Crucial Experiment

Abstract Following Duverger, low district magnitude (low number of seats per electoral district) produces a mechanical effect, the underrepresentation of small parties, and a psychological effect, discouraging voters from voting for small parties. The two effects usually occur together and cannot be tested separately.

The aim of the study is to analyze the relation between electoral district magnitude and multipartism in accordance with the election results of 1 November 2015 and 24 June 2018. With the approval of the Constitutional referendum which was held on 16 April 2017, the number of the members of parliament in Turkey increased from 550 to 600.
