Diuretic resistance: physiology and therapeutics.
Seminars in nephrology, 2000Diuretic drugs are usually effective treatment for edema when used judiciously. However, some patients become resistant to their effects. Adaptation to diuretic drugs and diuretic resistance may be caused by similar mechanisms. Diuretic adaptations can be classified as those that occur during diuretic action, those that cause sodium retention in the ...

[Diuretic resistance: mechanisms and therapeutic possibilities].
Archives des maladies du coeur et des vaisseaux, 1999The diuretics, with the exception of spironolactone, act on the luminal (or apical) surface of the tubular cells of different segments of the nephron. In order to act, they must be secreted into the tubular lumen. This transfer of the drug to its site of action may be blocked by decreased renal blood flow, the saturation of the systems of tubular ...

Salt, diuretics and resistance to treatment
1983Sodium occupies a central place in the pathogenesis and treatment of hypertension. This was recognized many years ago before chemotherapy for the treatment of hypertension was available. Kempner [1] used a rice diet providing 8 mEq of sodium to treat 500 patients. The diet was ineffective in 178 patients.
