A process-oriented analysis of the summertime diurnal cycle of precipitation and diabatic heating over China in three reanalyses [PDF]
We conduct a process-oriented analysis of the summertime diurnal cycle of precipitation (DCP) over China by comparing three widely used reanalyses (ERA5, JRA-55, and MERRA-2) with satellite observations.

The predatory effect of the honey‐buzzard affects the reproductive performance of Asian‐hornet colonies, decreasing the density of workers over distance and time. The foraging distances of the honey‐buzzard concentrates within the first 2000 m from nest, which supports the results observed.

This study develops a method to identify the source areas of precipitation events, as illustrated for the western part of the Netherlands. Radar‐based precipitation data are traced back to their source areas and machine‐learning techniques are used to identify hypothesized causes: urban heat, surface roughness, and air pollution. We find that urban and

Improved Diurnal Cycle of Precipitation in E3SM With a Revised Convective Triggering Function
We revise the convective triggering function in Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Atmosphere Model version 1 (EAMv1) by introducing a dynamic constraint on the initiation of convection that emulates the collective dynamical

Characterisation of the observed diurnal cycle of precipitation over the Maritime Continent [PDF]
AbstractThis study investigates the temporal and spatial complexities of the mean diurnal cycle (DC) of precipitation over the Maritime Continent during the wet season using the Integrated Multi‐satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) data product and highlights systematic inaccuracies of amplitude and phase representation using the first diurnal harmonic

In this study, the synoptic conditions for modes of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) in South Korea are generalized based on composite analysis. The preferred precipitation region, synoptic patterns, moisture transport, sea surface temperature and thermodynamic and dynamic instabilities are characterized according to four modes: convective cells (CC)

In Situ Observations of the Diurnal Variation in the Boundary Layer of Mature Hurricanes
Recent studies have suggested that the structure of tropical cyclones (TCs), especially the upper‐level clouds as indicated by satellite infrared brightness temperatures and precipitation, fluctuates with the diurnal cycle.

The relationship between equatorial wave interaction and heavy rainfall in Southeast Asia
This study examines the statistical relationship between co‐occurring equatorial waves and heavy rainfall in Southeast Asia. Heavy rainfall is more closely related to combined wave activity than to individual waves in many regions of Southeast Asia. The figure shows GPM–IMERG rainfall (shading) and ERA5 850‐hPa winds (vectors) composited on days when ...
