Isoperimetric inequalities on slabs with applications to cubes and Gaussian slabs

open access: yesCommunications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, EarlyView.
Abstract We study isoperimetric inequalities on “slabs”, namely weighted Riemannian manifolds obtained as the product of the uniform measure on a finite length interval with a codimension‐one base. As our two main applications, we consider the case when the base is the flat torus R2/2Z2$\mathbb {R}^2 / 2 \mathbb {Z}^2$ and the standard Gaussian measure

Resonance‐induced restoration of rock permeability degraded by heavy components of crude oil

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Resonance‐induced changes occur in filtration properties of sedimentary rocks in crude paraffin oil flow under acoustic vibrations. Experimental data on (a) pressure drop; (b) permeability; (c) pressure at the rock inlet; and (d) pressure at the rock outlet are presented.

Study on fracture parameter calibration and failure characteristics of rock with hole and crack

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The SIF and plastic zone equations for a single hole and crack have been derived. The model's failure state leads to the identification of four types of cracks. The plastic zone increases with increased brittleness and decreased crack length. Abstract Cracks within the surrounding rock of roadways significantly affect their stability and failure ...

Improving the Characteristics of the Direct FOC Strategy in DFIG‐Based Wind Turbine Systems Using FOIDD and FOPD Controllers

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This study presents a new control strategy for doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine systems to overcome the limitations of traditional direct field control using proportional‐integral (DFOC‐PI) regulators, which are sensitive to coefficient changes and lead to low power quality.

Convergence of interval fuzzy number sequences

open access: yesAIMS Mathematics
There are many opinions about multiplication and division formulas in interval numbers, but there is a common weakness in these formulas: That the division between two equal interval numbers does not produce the identity.

The Application of Adaptive Backstepping Sliding Mode for Hybrid Humanoid Robot Arm Trajectory Tracking Control

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2014
This paper presents a methodology of the dynamic analysis and control for a novel hybrid humanoid robot arm. The hybrid humanoid robot arm under consideration consists of a spherical parallel manipulator (SPM) connecting two revolute pairs in series form.

Development of abstract mathematical reasoning: The case of algebra

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2014
Algebra typically represents the students’ first encounter with abstract mathematical reasoning and it therefore causes significant difficulties for students who still reason concretely.

Boundary Layer Meshing and Wall Functions Selection for Numerical Simulation of Solid–Liquid Two‐Phase Flow

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This figure illustrates the optimal near‐wall treatment schemes (first‐layer height and wall function type) for solid–liquid two‐phase CFD of suspended sediment, which are correlated with particle size and flow velocity. ABSTRACT Near‐wall treatment (boundary‐layer meshing and wall functions) is a major uncertainty in solid–liquid two‐phase CFD of ...
