Mathematical principles of cell division
Journal of Biomechanics, 1984The report given here is an attempt of the mathematical formulations to solve a problem concerning cell division and the control of mass and volume of the nucleus and cytoplasm. The study of the interaction forces on the nucleus and the vibrational frequencies during cell division are analyzed in detail.

The Mathematics of the Pentium Division Bug
SIAM Review, 1997Summary: Despite all of the publicity surrounding the Pentium bug of 1994, the mathematical details of the bug are poorly understood. We discuss these details and supply a new proof of the Coe-Tang result that the at-risk divisors have six consecutive ones in positions 5 through 10.

Mathematical model for contact inhibited cell division
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1983We present a mathematical model for cell growth, which takes into account cell-cell interactions and leads to non-exponential inhibited growth of number of cells. The resulting difference equation is solved and extended to a differential equation which turns out to be of a non-linear diffusion type.

Mathematical biophysics of cell division
The Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics, 1943Summary: The new fundamental equation, based on the principle of maximum energy exchange, is applied to the case of elongation and constriction of a cell. A simple case is treated as an illustration, and it is shown that the elongation curves thus obtained are of the same character as in the old theory.

Mathematical induction, difference equations and divisibility
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2009Many exercises in mathematical induction require the student to prove a divisibility property of a function of the integers. Such problems are generally presented as being independent of each other. However, many of these problems can be presented in terms of difference equations, and the theory of difference equations can be used to provide a uniform ...
