Improved performance of direct methanol fuel cells with the porous catalyst layer using highly-active nanofiber catalyst

open access: yesCarbon Resources Conversion, 2018
PtRu supported on TiO2-embedded carbon nanofibers (PtRu/TECNF), which was recently reported as a highly-active catalyst for methanol oxidation, was applied to a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), and the power generation performance was compared to that ...

Valorisation of Shrimp Waste into Chitosan/Montmorillonite-Sulfosuccinic Acid Composite Membrane for DMFC Application

open access: yesReaktor, 2022
Composite membranes have been synthesized from biopolymer chitosan (CS) and nanosized montmorillonite (MMT) filler crosslinked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) as an alternative membrane electrolyte for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) application.

Selecting Between Hydrogen and Methanol for Fuel Cell‐Organic Rankine Cycle Hybrid Power Systems: A Comparative 4E Analysis

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
A 4E comparison of PEMFC‐ORC and DMFC‐ORC systems shows that PEMFC‐ORC achieves 21% higher energy efficiency, while DMFC‐ORC obtains 31% higher exergy efficiency and 57% lower levelized cost of electricity. However, DMFC‐ORC emits nearly twice the annual carbon dioxide equivalent of PEMFC‐ORC.

Mechanistic Insights and Performance Advancements in Flow Capacitive Deionisation for Sustainable Energy Conversion

open access: yesElectrochemical Science Advances, Volume 6, Issue 4, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Flow capacitive deionisation is an advanced electrochemical technology for water purification and energy‐related applications. It represents a viable alternative to conventional desalination methods due to its low operating voltage, continuous electrode regeneration, and stable performance under moderate‐to‐high salinity conditions. The use of

DMFC Performance of Polymer Electrolyte Membranes Prepared from a Graft-Copolymer Consisting of a Polysulfone Main Chain and Styrene Sulfonic Acid Side Chains

open access: yesEnergies, 2016
Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications were prepared from a graft-copolymer (PSF-g-PSSA) consisting of a polysulfone (PSF) main chain and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) side chains with various average ...

DMFC: Galvanic or electrolytic cell?

open access: yesElectrochemistry Communications, 2006
We report measurements of local current distribution in a direct methanol fuel cell with single straight channels and segmented electrodes. The experiments directly confirm the existence of a bifunctional regime of DMFC operation: at low air flow rate the segments located close to the inlet of the oxygen channel generate current (galvanic domain ...

Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation in a Gas‐Phase Electrolyzer: Formaldehyde versus Dimethoxymethane Formation

open access: yesChemElectroChem, Volume 13, Issue 11, 3 June 2026.
A gas‐phase electrolyzer with a Pt‐impregnated Nafion membrane anode was used for selectively oxidizing methanol to formaldehyde (FA) with low water content. However, maintaining the cell temperature at 100 °C for extended periods led to membrane dehydration and low water content in the effluent, causing most FA to react with methanol to form ...

A Novel Button-Type Micro Direct Methanol Fuel Cell with Graphene Diffusion Layer

open access: yesMicromachines, 2019
In order to solve the problem that bolts in traditional packaged direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) take up a large area and reduce the specific energy (energy per unit weight) and power density (power per unit area), a new button-type micro direct ...

Truncated Octahedral PtCu Alloy Nanoparticles for Efficient Methanol Electrooxidation

open access: yesMetalMat, Volume 3, Issue 2, June 2026.
Platinum–copper nano‐truncated octahedra are developed as efficient electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation in alkaline media, exhibiting notably enhanced activity compared to commercial Pt/C. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveals that alloying with copper modifies the electronic structure of platinum, facilitating the key reaction step and ...
