In 1973, it was first discovered that human hepatitis B virus (HBV) preparations from sera of chronically infected individuals contain an endogenous polymerase activity capable of carrying out a repair reaction on the viral DNA template in the presence of magnesium and nucleotide triphosphates (Kaplan et al. 1973).

Many viruses carry their genetic information in the form of RNA, and with the exception of the retroviruses replicate entirely through RNA intermediates. One such virus is lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, which has now been caught red-handed in the act of illicit synthesis of DNA — seemingly through the agency of the reverse transcriptase enzyme ...

Viral connectors for DNA encapsulation
Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 2012Viral connectors are key components of the life cycle of bacteriophages and other viral systems. They participate in procapsid assembly, and they are instrumental in DNA packaging and release. Connector proteins build hollow cylindrical dodecamers that show an overall morphological similarity among different viral systems including a remarkable ...

On the informational content of viral DNA
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1983This paper is concerned primarily with how information is stored in viral DNA. The general problem of defining information content is discussed and a procedure for analysis extended from that of Gatlin (1972) is developed. Long range correlations in base sequences are analyzed for several viral genomes.

Nuclear targeting of viral and non-viral DNA
Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery, 2009The nuclear envelope presents a major barrier to transgene delivery and expression using a non-viral vector. Virus is capable of overcoming the barrier to deliver their genetic materials efficiently into the nucleus by virtue of the specialized protein components with the unique amino acid sequences recognizing cellular nuclear transport machinery ...

Initiation of Viral DNA Replication
1988Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the mechanisms involved in initiation of animal virus DNA replication. This step is of fundamental importance because it represents the central point of control of the replication process. Two of the best-characterized viruses, adenovirus and SV40, are discussed as examples of viruses that normally multiply ...

Quantitation of bovine papilloma viral DNA in viral-induced tumors [PDF]
Bovine papilloma virus (BPV) DNA was labeled in vitro under conditions of repair synthesis and subsequently used as a "probe" in DNA-DNA reassociation studies to detect BPV-specific DNA sequences in a viral-induced calf meningioma and hamster fibroma.

Methylation of viral DNA in Vivo and in Vitro
Virology, 1979Abstract Methylation of herpesvirus saimiri DNA and adenovirus type 5 DNA was examined by labelling with [6-3H]uridine and [2-3H]adenosine and separating the bases by thin layer chromatography. The number of methyl groups was less than one per genome in both DNAs, indicating that these viral DNAs are not substrates for methylation in vivo.

Production of Non Viral DNA Vectors
Current Gene Therapy, 2010After some decades of research, development and first clinical approaches to use DNA vectors in gene therapy, cell therapy and DNA vaccination, the requirements for the pharmaceutical manufacturing of gene vectors has improved significantly step by step.
