Nuclear DNA content determination in Characiformes fish (Teleostei, Ostariophysi) from the Neotropical region

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2002
In the present study, nuclear DNA content was analyzed in 53 species of Characiformes fish from the Neotropical region. Diploid number ranged from 2n = 48 in Astyanax fasciatus, Gymnocorymbus ternetzi and Hyphessobrycon griemi to 2n = 102 in Potamorhina ...

Nonclassical Biofilms Induced by DNA Breaks in Klebsiella pneumoniae

open access: yesmSphere, 2020
Biofilms usually form when the density of bacteria increases during the middle to late periods of growth in culture, commonly induced by quorum-sensing systems.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

COMPENSATORY LUNG GROWTH: LUNG PROTEIN,DNA AND RNA CONTENTS IN TRILOBECTOMIZED RATS

open access: yesActa Cirúrgica Brasileira, 1998
Aiming at assessing compensatory lung growth after trilobectomy in rats, 3 groups of animals (control, thoracotomy and trilobectomy) were studied over 3 time intervals (7, 30 and 180 days post-operation).

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Cellular Processing Pathways Contribute to the Activation of Etoposide- Induced DNA Damage Responses

open access: yes, 2009
Cytotoxic action (tumor cell killing) and carcinogenic side effect ( therapy-related secondary leukemia) of etoposide are closely related to its ability in stabilizing topoisomerase II cleavable complex (TOP2cc), a unique form of protein- linked DNA ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Computational analysis of promoters and DNA-protein interactions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The investigation of promoter activity and DNA-protein interactions is very important for understanding many crucial cellular processes, including transcription, recombination and replication.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Flow cytometric analysis and microsatellite genotyping reveal extensive DNA content variation in Trypanosoma cruzi populations and expose contrasts between natural and experimental hybrids. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Trypanosoma cruzi exhibits remarkable genetic heterogeneity. This is evident at the nucleotide level but also structurally, in the form of karyotypic variation and DNA content differences between strains. Although natural populations of T.
