Phenotypic and genetic resistance to Septoria blotch disease in European wheat varieties

open access: yesThe Plant Genome, Volume 19, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Zymoseptoria tritici, the causal agent of Septoria tritici blotch (STB), poses a critical threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in temperate Europe, underscoring the need for durable genetic resistance. Here, we screened 151 winter wheat varieties at the seedling stage using a mixed inoculum of five virulent isolates.

The cervico‐vaginal DNA methylation WID‐qEC test: An epigenetic marker associated with ovarian cancer in the absence of endometrial and cervical cancer

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 158, Issue 10, Page 2530-2536, 15 May 2026.
What's New? The DNA methylation‐based WID‐qEC test has been validated for the accurate detection of endometrial and cervical cancers using cervico‐vaginal samples. However, a small proportion of women test positive despite the absence of these cancers. This study explored the associated biological and clinical characteristics to inform potential follow‐

Morphological, Molecular, and Isotopic Approaches to Termite Ecology: A Mangrove Case Study

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 3, May 2026.
Termite communities in Caribbean mangroves, though species‐poor, sustain crucial decomposition and nutrient cycling. Their overlapping niches and stochastic assembly highlight termites' resilience and ecological importance in supporting the functioning of these challenging coastal ecosystems.

Two new charismatic Pristimantis species (Anura: Craugastoridae) from the tepuis of “The Lost World” (Pantepui region, South America) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Two new colourful species of direct-developing frogs of the genus Pristimantis are described from the summit of two isolated tepuis (sandstone table mountains) in the Eastern Pantepui District of the Guiana Shield highlands. Pristimantis jamescameroni sp.

Controlled trial of cervical cancer screening frequency among human‐papillomavirus‐vaccinated women

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 158, Issue 7, Page 1941-1951, 1 April 2026.
What's new? Since the introduction of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in 2006, vaccine‐type infections have declined markedly. As nonvaccine HPV types generally carry lower oncogenic potential, this shift warrants reevaluation of cervical screening regimens.

The FORGENIUS Genomic Resources: New Genotyping Tools and Genomic Data for 23 Forest Tree Species and Their Genetic Conservation Units

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Genetic diversity is a critical but often overlooked component of biological diversity. The European H2020 FORGENIUS project is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of genetic data to start monitoring the European network of forest Genetic Conservation Units (GCUs).

Occurrence and Diversity of Cyanotoxins and Retinoid Compounds in Antarctic Microbial Mats: Evidence From James Ross Island

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 2, April 2026.
Occurrence and distribution of cyanotoxins and retinoids across different Antarctic ecosystems at James Ross Island. These ecosystems harbour diverse microbial communities dominated by autotrophic cyanobacteria and algae, which can produce hazardous compounds for animals.
