A Blind Source Separation Technique for Document Restoration

SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, 2019
Summary: We examine an instance of the blind source separation problem, namely, the reconstruction of digital documents degraded by bleed-through and show-through effects. We introduce a nonstationary, locally linear data model and a solution approach based on the assumption of cross-correlated ideal sources.

Restoration of Old Documents with Genetic Algorithms

2003
Image recognition is a problem present in many real-world applications. In this paper we present an application of genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve one of those problems: the recovery of a deteriorated old document from the damages caused by centuries.

Restoration of archival documents using a wavelet technique

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2002
This paper addresses a problem of restoring handwritten archival documents by recovering their contents from the interfering handwriting on the reverse side caused by the seeping of ink. We present a novel method that works by first matching both sides of a document such that the interfering strokes are mapped with the corresponding strokes originating

Restoration and Preservation of Charred Documents

Canadian Society of Forensic Science Journal, 1968
Author SummaryExperiments have been conducted in testing methods for separatil1g adhering sheets of burned papers and observing the effect of further burning in making the text more legible. In addition, means have been developed to preserve fragile burned or ashed papers so that they will not be further damaged through handling and hence be even less ...

Restoring camera-captured distorted document images

International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR), 2014
This article discusses restoration of camera-captured distorted document images. Without the assistance of 3D data or model, our algorithm estimates and rectifies document warping just from 2D image based on line segmentation. Warping shape of each text line is acquired by estimating baselines' shape and characters' slant angles after line segmentation.

A method for restoration of low-resolution document images

International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2000
Image restoration using resolution expansion is important in many areas of image processing. This paper introduces a restoration method for low-resolution text images which produces expanded images with improved definition. This technique creates a strongly bimodal image with smooth regions in both the foreground and background, while allowing for ...

A Restoration and Segmentation Unit for the Historic Persian Documents

2005
This paper aims to provide a document restoration and segmentation algorithm for the Historic Middle Persian or Pahlavi manuscripts. The proposed algorithm uses the mathematical morphology and connected component concept to segment the line, word, and character overlapped in the Middle-age Persian documents in preparation for OCR application.

Restoration of Audio Documents by Means of Extended Kalman Filter

IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing, 2010
We present some results on audio restoration obtained with an algorithm that solves the problems of broadband noise filtering, signal parameters tracking, and impulsive noise removal by using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) theory. We show that, to achieve maximum performance, it is essential to optimize the EKF implementation. To this purpose, having
