The Doherty power amplifier

IEEE Microwave Magazine, 2006
In this article, we show that the Doherty amplifier is capable of delivering the stringent requirements of the base station power amplifiers. We explain the operation principles, including both linearity and efficiency improvements, and the basic circuit configuration of the amplifier.

Design of an E-band Doherty Power amplifier

open access: yes2018 14th Conference on Ph.D. Research in Microelectronics and Electronics (PRIME), 2018
This paper demonstrates the design of an E-band Doherty power amplifier (PA) based in an 130nm SiGe BiCMOS process. This design includes main and auxiliary amplifiers, lange coupler and a pre-amplifier. The designed power amplifier exhibits a saturated output power of 14.4 dBm and output referred P1dB of 11.7 dBm.

Designing a Doherty power amplifier

open access: yesMelecon 2010 - 2010 15th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference, 2010
The aim of this paper is to present an easy and rigorous way to design a Doherty power amplifier (DPA) starting from the requirements of the wireless system, in which it has to be integrated. In particular, accounting for the value of the pick to average power ratio (PAPR) of the system, design guidelines will be given to correctly address each design ...

A Saturated Doherty Power Amplifier Based On Saturated Amplifier

open access: yesIEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, 2010
A saturated Doherty power amplifier (PA) based on the saturated PA tuned by the self-generated harmonic currents is presented. When driven with mobile WiMAX 1FA signal, this Doherty PA demonstrates high efficiency performance (average 57%) over the WiMAX band from 2.5 GHz to 2.7 GHz.

A new Doherty amplifier design approach

open access: yes2010 IEEE 11th Annual Wireless and Microwave Technology Conference (WAMICON), 2010
The conventional Doherty amplifier requires the auxiliary device current to increase faster than the main as the input power increases. This has been accomplished by additional control circuitry, or uneven power drive, or periphery scaling. This paper presents a new Doherty design approach that accepts the insufficient auxiliary device current.

The microwave Doherty amplifier

1994 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest (Cat. No.94CH3389-4), 2002
A microwave Doherty amplifier has been designed using PHEMT devices in a novel configuration at L-band. Power-added efficiency of 61% is achieved at -1 dB gain compression in CW and is maintained at 61% at 5.5 dB back-off from the above point. The theory, design and measurement for this new amplifier are discussed. >

New Output Combiner for Doherty Amplifiers

IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, 2013
In this letter, a new output combining network for the implementation of a Doherty Power Amplifier (DPA) is presented. The proposed topology simultaneously allows the active load modulation and the output matching, by adopting more realizable elements than the standard DPA, especially when high output power levels are required.

A compact 90W broadband Doherty amplifier

2016 14th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS), 2016
Traditional power amplifiers use transmission lines (TL) as a means of matching the transistor to the system. This results in large matching networks and thus large amplifiers. To reduce circuit size, as well as maintain the power handling, we have developed a method to construct a lumped-element/TL hybrid matching network.

Multiband Doherty RF power amplifier

IEEE Africon '11, 2011
In era of exploding energy consumption and thus equipment operating cost as well as the parallel environmental need to reduce the carbon footprint, energy efficient mobile radio is a very important issue and future challenge. Additionally, increased number of standards, frequency bands and applications require flexible and sustainable solutions.

Voltage Mode Doherty Power Amplifier

IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, 2017
This paper presents a new wideband Doherty amplifier technique that can achieve high efficiency while maintaining excellent linearity. By modifying a “forgotten” topology originally proposed by Doherty, a new Doherty amplifier architecture is realized with two voltage mode power amplifiers (PAs) and transformers, thus eliminating a narrowband impedance
