Simplicity and Specificity in Language: Domain general biases have domain specific effects

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2016
The extent to which the linguistic system—its architecture, the representations it operates on, the constraints it is subject to—is specific to language has broad implications for cognitive science and its relation to evolutionary biology. Importantly, a

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Face recognition deficits in autism spectrum disorders are both domain specific and process specific. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Although many studies have reported face identity recognition deficits in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), two fundamental question remains: 1) Is this deficit "process specific" for face memory in particular, or does it extend to perceptual ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Developmental language disorder : a language specific disorder or a domain general disorder?

open access: yes, 2020
Developmental language disorder (DLD; prior called specific language impairment, (Bishop et al., 2017) is one of the most frequent childhood disorders. Efficient intervention requires that we understand the underlying nature of the disorder.

Domain-specific regular acceleration [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal on Software Tools for Technology Transfer, 2011
The regular model-checking approach is a set of techniques aimed at exploring symbolically infinite state spaces. These techniques proceed by representing sets of configurations of the system under analysis by regular languages, and the transition relation between these configurations by a transformation over such languages.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Octascope: A Lightweight Pre-Trained Model for Optical Coherence Tomography

open access: yesIEEE Access
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging enables high resolution visualization of sub-surface tissue microstructures. However, OCT image analysis using deep learning is hampered by limited diverse training data to meet performance requirements and high

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Llama-Derived Single Domain Antibodies Specific for Abrus Agglutinin

open access: yesToxins, 2011
Llama derived single domain antibodies (sdAb), the recombinantly expressed variable heavy domains from the unique heavy-chain only antibodies of camelids, were isolated from a library derived from llamas immunized with a commercial abrin toxoid ...
