Mothers’ Views on Donor Milk and Human Milk Banks

open access: yesPediatrics & Neonatal Biology Open Access, 2022
Aim: The goal of this study is to find out what factors affect mothers’ knowledge and perspectives about wet-nursing and human milk banking. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and comparative research project. 295 mothers volunteered to take part in the study.

Lactoferrin treatment activates acetylcholinesterase, decreasing acetylcholine levels in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell culture supernatants, inhibiting cell survival

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Representation of the suggested mode of action of lactoferrin (Lf) in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells. Lf induces activation of caspase‐3 by activating p53 and AChE leading to decreased ACh concentrations. In turn, ACh signaling leads to activation of VEGF and AKT and blocking of caspase‐3.

The Effect of Human Milk on Modulating the Quality of Growth in Preterm Infants

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2018
Introduction: Human milk is the optimal nutrition for preterm infants. When the mother's own milk is unavailable, donor human milk is recommended as an alternative for preterm infants.

Ultrasonication and the quality of human milk: variation of power and time of exposure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Donor human milk is pasteurized to prevent the potential risk of the transmission of pathogens to preterm infants. Currently, Holder pasteurization (human milk held at 62·5°C for 30 min) is used in most human milk banks, but has the disadvantage that it ...

HSP70 governs permeability and mechanotransduction in primary human endothelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
HSP70 chemical inhibition reduces endothelial cell proliferation and increases permeability, the latter supported by normal interendothelial junctional protein distribution. HSP70 also plays a role in shear stress response, a hemodynamic force naturally present in blood vessels and correlated with vessel protection.

ATG4B is required for mTORC1‐mediated anabolic activity and is associated with clinical outcomes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes governing lung cancer cell growth is nuanced. We show that ATG4B, an autophagy regulator, is elevated in lung cancer and that high ATG4B is associated with worse patient outcomes. Targeting ATG4B in cells reduces growth, protein synthesis, and mTORC1 activity, demonstrating a new relationship ...

The milk of human kindness: the story of the Mothers Milk Bank at Austin

open access: yesInternational Breastfeeding Journal, 2006
Increased scientific study of human milk and awareness of the special nutritional needs of the premature infant have stimulated interest in human donor milk banking. Yet only three donor human milk banks existed in the United States in 1998.

Plasma Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Correlates With Brain Metal Burden in Wilson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Neuroinflammation driven by extracellular copper contributes to neuronal damage in Wilson's disease (WD). This study investigated the relationship between brain metal burden and peripheral neuroinflammation markers in WD. Methods We conducted a cross‐sectional study involving 89 participants, including patients with WD (n = 63 ...

Murine liver allograft transplantation: Tolerance and donor cell chimerism [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Nonarterialized orthotopic liver transplantation with no immunosuppression was performed in 13 mouse‐strain combinations. Two strain combinations with major histocompatibility complex class I and class II and minor histocompatibility complex disparity ...
