Cell-type specific asynchronous modulation of PKA by dopamine in learning

open access: yesNature, 2020
Reinforcement learning models postulate that neurons that release dopamine encode information about action and action outcome, and provide a teaching signal to striatal spiny projection neurons in the form of dopamine release1.

Dopamine Has a Critical Role in Photoreceptor Degeneration in the rd Mouse

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2002
Photoreceptors receive paracrine input from dopaminergic interplexiform cells. Rod photoreceptors in the rd mouse degenerate rapidly due to a specific gene defect.

Intraventricular dopamine infusion alleviates motor symptoms in a primate model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2020
Background: Continuous compensation of dopamine represents an ideal symptomatic treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). The feasibility in intracerebroventricular administration (i.c.v.) of dopamine previously failed because of unresolved dopamine ...

Light‐Responsive Enzyme‐Loaded Nanoparticles for Tunable Adhesion and Mechanical Wound Contraction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a photoactivatable enzyme‐loaded mesoporous nanoparticle system (MPDA_PaTy) that enables light‐triggered tunable tissue adhesion and facilitates mechanical wound contraction. Controlled enzymatic crosslinking at tissue or hydrogel interfaces allows on‐demand adhesion.

Time outdoors and the prevention of myopia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Recent epidemiological evidence suggests that children who spend more time outdoors are less likely to be, or to become myopic, irrespective of how much near work they do, or whether their parents are myopic.

Tailoring the Properties of Functional Materials With N‐Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The properties of materials bearing N‐oxide groups are often dominated by the polar N+─O− bond. It provides hydrophilicity, selective ion‐binding, electric conductivity, or antifouling properties. Many of the underlying mechanisms have only recently been discovered, and the interest in N‐oxide materials is rapidly growing.

GABA co-released from striatal dopamine axons dampens phasic dopamine release through autoregulatory GABAA receptors

open access: yesCell Reports
Summary: Striatal dopamine axons co-release dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), using GABA provided by uptake via GABA transporter-1 (GAT1). Functions of GABA co-release are poorly understood.
