Machine Learning Based Prediction of Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification in the Western North Pacific: Importance of Data Augmentation and Loss Function

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 2, April 2026.
Abstract In this study, we developed a TabNet‐based machine learning model to predict tropical cyclone (TC) rapid intensification (RI) in the Western North Pacific. The most significant challenge in predicting RI is the severe class imbalance between rapid and non‐rapid intensification cases, typically 4.2:1 ratio based on 1977–2021 records.

Aircraft Wake Vortex Parametrization Based on 1.5-μm Coherent Doppler Lidar Data

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2016
A strategy of measurement by a 1.5-μm pulsed coherent Doppler lidar “Stream Line” has been developed, and a method for estimation of aircraft wake vortices from the lidar data has been proposed.

Observation of Mountain Waves and Secondary Gravity Waves in the Mesosphere Lower Thermosphere Above Patagonia

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract We find observational evidence for mountain waves (MWs) and secondary gravity waves (2GWs) in the OH*(3‐1) layer above Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. On the night of 21–22 May 2018, the Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (AMTM) obtained temperatures at ∼84 ${\sim} 84$ km.

Design of a Non-scanning Lidar for Wind Velocity and Direction Measurement

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2016
A Doppler lidar system for wind velocity and direction measurement is presented. The lidar use a wide field of view (FOV) objective lens as an optical antenna for both beam transmitting and signal receiving.

Convective Organization in African Easterly Waves Observed During the NAMMA and CPEX‐CV Field Campaigns

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract Fundamental questions remain about where and when convection will occur within African easterly waves. In this study, we aim to better understand the dynamical processes that govern moist convective organization at the meso‐alpha scale in tropical easterly waves using NASA airborne field campaigns and satellite observations.

Listening to the Atmosphere: Using Infrasound Observations to Infer Atmospheric Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract The stratosphere and mesosphere are important regions for the prediction of weather at the Earth's surface for medium‐ and long‐range forecasts. The availability of observations in these layers is lower than that of the troposphere, especially for the dynamics. While seeking new observational sources is important, there are existing infrasound

Analysis of airborne Doppler lidar, Doppler radar and tall tower measurements of atmospheric flows in quiescent and stormy weather [PDF]

open access: yes
The first experiment to combine airborne Doppler Lidar and ground-based dual Doppler Radar measurements of wind to detail the lower tropospheric flows in quiescent and stormy weather was conducted in central Oklahoma during four days in June-July 1981 ...
