Coherent Doppler lidar signal spectrum with wind turbulence

Applied Optics, 1999
The average signal spectrum (periodogram) for coherent Doppler lidar is calculated for a turbulent wind field. Simple approximations are compared with the exact calculation. The effects of random errors in the zero velocity reference, the effects of averaging spectral estimates by use of multiple lidar pulses, and the effects of the range dependence of

Mission profiles for the proposed Doppler lidar WIND

Coherent Laser Radar: Technology and Applications, 1991
During phase A of the development of the airborne pulsed CO2 laser-Doppler system WIND [1] a lot of scientific objectives were studied. The intension for the airborne system is — to use it for wind field measurements— to use the experience during the development and test phase for further development of a spaccborne lidar.

Simulation of wind profiles from a space-borne Doppler wind lidar

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2003
AbstractThe importance of wind observations for meteorological analysis has been recognized for many years. The current global observing system lacks a uniform distribution of tropospheric wind measurements, especially in the tropics and southern hemisphere, and over the northern‐hemisphere oceans.

Airborne Doppler Lidar Wind Field Measurements

Topical Meeting on Optical Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere, 1985
Pulsed and continous-wave coherent lidar are being used in airborne measurements to determine mesoscale wind fields and atmospheric backscatter. This paper describes recent measurements as well as future plans.

Wind Variability Measured by Doppler Lidar

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1989
Abstract Wind power spectral density measured in the lower and middle troposphere under zonal flow conditions is consistent with a −5/3 slope to frequencies as high as 10−2 Hz. By conversion of frequency to a spatial coordinate it is found that a satellite-borne lidar when averaging such winds over a 300 km grid scale would measure the synoptic-scale ...

Wind Turbine Wake Visualization by Doppler Lidar

Light, Energy and the Environement 2015, 2015
Turbulent wake of wind turbine reduces the power output of wind farm. The coherent Doppler Lidar is used to visualize the turbulent wake of wind turbine blades to analyze its scale and wind velocity deficit.

Intercomparison of Doppler Wind Lidar Velocity Measurements

Optical Remote Sensing, 2003
Three collocated Doppler Wind Lidars (DWLs) were used to measure winds during a demonstration campaign in New Hampshire September 2000. Corresponding line-of-sight (LOS) velocities determined by pairs of DWLs realized good agreement under clear sky conditions with random differences that increase as a function of decreasing signal strength.

Deriving wind gusts from Doppler lidar measurements

2022
<p>Doppler lidar systems allow for a reliable determination of the profiles of wind speed and wind direction in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) based on classical measurement strategies such as a VAD scan (Velocity Azimuth Display, e.g. Päschke et al., 2015, Atmos. Meas. Tech. 8, 2251–2266).

Suitability of Doppler Wind Lidars Measurement for Wind Climatology

The main objective of this report is to assess how Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) profile measurements can be exploited to inform microscale flow modelling in urban settings.
