Silent invaders: the hidden threat of asymptomatic phytobiomes to forest biosecurity. [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytol
Summary Populations of diverse, unknown, and potentially pathogenic fungi and fungus‐like organisms are continuously introduced into new locations via asymptomatic infections (e.g. as endophytes or latent pathogens) within internationally traded live plants.

Evaluation of fungal endophytes to biological control of Dothistroma needle blight on Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana (Crimean pine)

open access: yesНаукові праці Лісівничої академії наук України, 2019
Dothistroma needle blight (DNB), caused by Dothistroma septosporum and Dothistroma pini, is the most important forest disease of pine in many countries.

The host spectrum of Dothistroma needle blight Mycosphaerella pini E. Rostrup - new hosts of Dothistroma needle blight observed in theCzech Republic

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2006
Dothistroma needle blight Mycosphaerella pini E. Rostrup and its anamorphic stage Dothistroma septospora (Dorog.) Morelet was detected for the first time in the territory of the Czech Republic in a consignment of imported plants of Austrian pine Pinus ...

Advancing forest pathology: the need for community-driven molecular experimental model systems. [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytol
Summary Forests world‐wide are under escalating threat from emerging and invasive fungal and oomycete pathogens, driven by globalization and shifting climate dynamics. Effective strategies to manage the current scale and rate of changes in forest health remain hindered by our limited ability to study the underlying mechanisms of pathogen–host and ...

Warmer and wetter might not be better

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2014
As the climate continues to change, gaps in our understanding of how the altered environment will affect forest hosts and their pathogens widen. In some areas pathogens thought to be present for centuries are changing their behaviour.

A conserved extracellular Ribo1 with broad‐spectrum cytotoxic activity enables smut fungi to compete with host‐associated bacteria

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 240, Issue 5, Page 1976-1989, December 2023., 2023
Summary Ribotoxins are secreted ribonucleases that specifically target and cleave the universally conserved sarcin–ricin loop sequence of rRNA, which leads to inhibition of protein biosynthesis and subsequently to cell death. We have identified and characterized a secreted Ribo1 protein of plant pathogenic smut fungi.

Selected climatic variables in Slovakia are favourable to the development of Dothistroma needle blight

open access: yesFolia Oecologica, 2020
Dothistroma needle blight (DNB) is a disease of pine needles. It causes significant defoliation of affected trees; intensive attacks lead to damages of the whole stand.

Comparative Gene Expression Analysis Reveals Mechanism of Pinus contorta Response to the Fungal Pathogen Dothistroma septosporum

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, 2021
Many conifers have distributions that span wide ranges in both biotic and abiotic conditions, but the basis of response to biotic stress has received much less attention than response to abiotic stress.
