A generalized double-hurdle model of Swedish gambling expenditures
Applied Economics, 2014This article estimates the relationship between demand for Swedish gambling, income and the other socioeconomic variables using empirical models of participation and gambling expenditure. It also indirectly attempts to account for the effect of a recent recession on gambling behaviour by examining gambling behaviour when the economy was growing versus ...

The UK demand for cigarettes 1954–1986, a double-hurdle approach
Journal of Health Economics, 1989The double-hurdle perspective suggests that it is crucial to distinguish between per capita and per smoker consumption when estimating the demand for cigarettes. This paper presents a two equation model which identifies consumption and participation as two separate decisions. The model is estimated with annual data on U.K.

A Box-Cox Double-Hurdle model of wildlife valuation: The citizen's perspective [PDF]
Abstract A stated-preference approach is used to elicit the attitudes of the general public towards coyote conservation. The payment vehicle is presented in a way that explicitly prompts respondents to adopt a citizen perspective, rather than a consumer perspective, when responding to the survey.

A Double-Hurdle Quantification Model for Freezing of Gait of Parkinson's Patients
IEEE Transactions on Biomedical EngineeringFreezing of gait (FOG) leads to an increased risk of falls and limited mobility in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, existing research ignores the fine-grained quantitative assessment of FOG severity. This paper provides a double-hurdle model that uses typical spatiotemporal gait features to quantify the FOG severity in patients with ...

Bayesian Estimation of the Double Hurdle Model in the Presence of Fixed Costs
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2005We present a model of market participation in which the presence of non-negligible fixed costs leads to random censoring of the traditional double-hurdle model. Fixed costs arise when household resources must be devoted a priori to the decision to participate in the market.

A DOUBLE-HURDLE MODEL OF FOOD DEMAND WITH ENDOGENOUS UNIT VALUES
1999This study develops a unique double-hurdle model of demand for composite food commodities which endogenizes unit values. The model structure allows us to account for the inability to observe such values for non-purchasing households and simultaneously adjusts for quality demand effects reflected in these unit values.

Estimating double-hurdle models with dependent errors and heteroskedasticity [PDF]
This paper describes the estimation of the parameters of a double-hurdle model in Stata. It is shown that the independent double-hurdle model can be estimated using a combination of existing commands. Likelihood evaluators to be used with Stata’s ml facilities are derived to illustrate how to fit independent and dependent inverse hyperbolic sine double-
