On the Double Object Construction and the Oblique Construction in Cantonese
Studies in Language, 1997The double-object construction has always been a controversial issue in linguistic theory. In Chinese we encounter an interesting and peculiar situation: both Mandarin and Cantonese have the dative construction with the indirect object (IO) introduced by a dative preposition (V + DO + Prep. + IO), but when the preposition is absent, the indirect object

On the Emergence of the Inverted Double Object Construction in Hakka
Journal of Chinese Linguistics,

On the preferred form of the double object construction
Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 1974Two groups of 15 adults participated in two preference rating tasks for written sentence forms. Pairs of sentences were presented to the subjects which differed only in the grammatical form used to express the double object construction (one which has both a direct and an indirect object).

The double object constructions in Archaic Chinese*
Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale, 2008This article demonstrates that double object constructions in Archaic Chinese display both patterns of direct and indirect object marking (DO+IO) and primary and secondary object marking (PO+SO). We propose two constraints to account for the grammatical distribution of GIVE verbs in the double object construction with PO+SO marking in Archaic Chinese.

Double‐Object Constructions in Syrian Arabic
Syntax, 2018AbstractThis article documents double‐object constructions in contemporary Syrian Arabic and presents an analysis of the case‐frame alternations found there. Some double‐object verbs assign accusative case to their indirect object, as in English, while others assign it dative, as in German. Yet, for both verb types, the double‐object frame productively

Cantonese give and Double-Object Construction
2022GIVE is a versatile morpheme in many languages. While there have been extensive studies on the interplay between the syntax and semantics of GIVE in many languages, not much has been done in a similar manner on Cantonese, a member of the Yue dialect group of the Chinese language family.
