Numerical simulation of downburst winds

open access: yesJournal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2009
The wind field of an intense idealised downburst wind storm has been studied using an axisymmetric, dry, non-hydrostatic numerical sub-cloud model. The downburst driving processes of evaporation and melting have been paramaterized by an imposed cooling source that triggers and sustains a downdraft.

Pressure distributions on a cube in a simulated thunderstorm downburst. Part B: moving downburst observations

open access: yesJournal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2002
The wind characteristics in thunderstorms, particularly downbursts, differ significantly from those of synoptic scale boundary layer winds. This paper describes work aimed at simulating the flow structure in a moving downburst and obtaining the transient

An empirical model of a downburst

Engineering Structures, 2000
Abstract A “downburst” was defined as a strong downdraft which induces an outburst of damaging winds on or near the ground. Such events normally occur during thunderstorms. It has been well documented that downbursts cause frequent failures of high voltage electricity transmission towers in Australia, and several other countries.

Mesoscale Numerical Simulation of a Downburst

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Research, 2011
Downburst winds with their great destructive power have caused destruction of numerous engineering structures around the world. Study on wind loadings of downburst is essential and hot in the wind engineering field. But various meteorological factors of downburst formulation are not considered in existing research methods in the wind engineering field.

Pressure distributions on a cube in a simulated thunderstorm downburst—Part A: stationary downburst observations

open access: yesJournal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2002
Abstract Thunderstorms are responsible for a large amount of wind-induced damage around the world. It is known that the wind characteristics in thunderstorms, particularly downbursts, differ significantly from those of synoptic scale boundary layer winds. This paper describes a study aimed at simulating the flow structure in a downburst and obtaining

A novel approach to scaling experimentally produced downburst-like impinging jet outflows

open access: yesJournal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2020
Downbursts are intense thunderstorm winds that can be found in most, if not all, regions around the globe. An accurate experimental investigation of downburst winds requires the proper geometric and kinematic scaling between the model downburst (m ...
