Interpolative differential pulse code modulation (IDPCM) is known to outperform DPCM at rate 1 b/sample for several synthetic source models. The authors use minimum-mean-squared error (MMSE) fixed-lag smoothing with DPCM to develop a code generator using delayed decoding.

A prequantizer with the human visual effect for the DPCM
Signal Processing: Image Communication, 1996Abstract In this paper, a new differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) structure is proposed to improve the conventional DPCM. In the conventional DPCM, the design of the prediction error quantizer is mainly a nonuniform optimum quantizer. This kind of the optimum quantizer must require some statistical data in advance such that the complexity of ...

Adaptive DPCM with median type predictors
IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 1991In this paper, we introduce an improved DPCM (Differential pulse Code Modulation) coding method that utilizes adaptive quantization and nonlinem (median type) predictors (Median Adaptive DPCM, MADPCM). DPCM is a promising coding method for television applications because of its simplicity and visual properties.

On the DPCM compression of Gaussian autoregressive sequences
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2001Differential pulse-coded modulation (DPCM) encoding of Gaussian autoregressive (AR) sequences is considered. It is pointed out that DPCM is rate-distortion inefficient at low bit rates. Simple filtering modifications are proposed and incorporated into DPCM. A rate-distortion optimization framework that results in optimal filters is presented.

Stability Conditions for DPCM Coders
IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1982Differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) systems, used for encoding signals, are recursive and can exhibit instability under certain conditions. In this paper, sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of multidimensional DPCM systems are obtained both in the signal domain and the transform domain.
