Citizen scientists mapping the United Kingdom's and Republic of Ireland's flat flies (louse flies) (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) reveal a vector's range shift

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
The Common or Bird Louse Fly Ornithomya avicularia, a vector of Haemoproteus sp. and trypanosomes, has undergone a major northwards range expansion in the United Kingdom since the 1960s. The Finch Louse Fly Ornithomya fringillina has also expanded its range northwards and westwards, and the Swallow Louse Fly Ornithomya biloba is now established in ...

Functional study of Phaeodactylum tricornutum Seipin highlights specificities of lipid droplets biogenesis in diatoms

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Diatoms are a major phylum of microalgae, playing crucial ecological roles. They derive from secondary endosymbiosis, leading to a complex intracellular architecture. Their ability to store oil in lipid droplets (LDs) upon unfavourable conditions has raised interest for applications, in particular biofuels, yet Lipid Droplet (LD) biogenesis ...

Freshwater restoration effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services: a Delphi survey

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Freshwater ecosystem restoration is vital for halting biodiversity loss, enhancing resilience, and securing ecosystem services amid climate and land use change. With major initiatives like the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the European Union's Nature Restoration Regulation gaining momentum, identifying ...

Whole genome shotgun phylogenomics resolve the diving beetle tree of life

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, EarlyView.
A new and strongly supported phylogeny of diving beetles (Dytiscidae) is presented using the largest genomic dataset to date. Laccophilinae and Coptotominae + Lancetinae are early diverging lineages excluded from a large monophyletic clade comprising the remaining eight subfamilies. We identify seven remaining problems in the backbone of the phylogeny,
