The Use of Aluminum Drill Pipe for Damping Drill String Vibrations

SPE Norway One Day Seminar, 2018
Abstract Drill string vibrations are a significant concern during drilling operations, and are a common cause of downhole tool failures and decreases in drilling efficiency. Drill string vibrations are typically categorized in three ways: axial (the drill string is vibrating along the axis of drilling), lateral (the drill string is ...

Longitudinal Vibrations of a Drill String

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1965
When drilling an oil well with a rotary drill, the penetration rate often can be substantially increased by superimposing a vibratory motion on the rotating bit. In order to evaluate drilling methods that would include both rotary and vibratory action, a study has been made on the vibrational characteristics of long drill string. The resonant frequency

Research and Analysis of Drilling String Vibration Signals

2020 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation (ICMA), 2020
Drilling tools are the main components of the drilling system, including drill bits and drill rods. During the drilling process, due to the collision between the drill bit and different formations, the drill string often vibrates, which causes damage to the drill bit and has a serious negative impact on drilling.

The Research on Axial Vibration of Drill String with Delphi

2009 International Conference on Computational Intelligence and Natural Computing, 2009
Drill string vibration is a very prevalent phenomena, it does great effect to drilling engineering, drill string resonance is the main reason that causes the drill string fatigue. In this paper the drill string is object that is studied, the axial vibration is analyzed for the total system of drill string.

Guidelines for Controlling Drill String Vibrations

Journal of Energy Resources Technology, 1984
Bottom-hole assemblies control the vibration response of drill strings because they are much heavier and stiffer than drill pipe. The length of bottom-hole assemblies is also a factor and the present practice of determining drill collar length often leads to natural tuning with drill bit displacement frequencies. As a result, bottom-hole assemblies are

Drill String Vibration: How to Identify and Suppress

Proceedings of Latin American and Caribbean Petroleum Engineering Conference, 1997
Abstract Drill string vibrations can diminish the life of the pipe by accelerating the process of fatigue. Also excessive vibration can cause pipe failure, wash-outs and decrease in the penetration rate. This work describes the first experience in Brazil on identification and suppression of vibrations of the pipe ...

Nonlinear Modeling and Qualitative Analysis of Coupled Vibrations in a Drill String

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2018
A coupled model for axial/torsional/lateral vibrations of the drill string is presented, in which the nonlinear dynamics and qualitative analysis method are employed to find out the key factors and sensitive zone for coupled vibration. The drill string is simplified as an equivalent shell under axial rotation.

Longitudinal and Angular Drill-String Vibrations With Damping

Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1968
This paper discusses longitudinal and angular drill-string vibrations and supporting field measurements taken with a special downhole recording instrument. Computer programs based on the theory are used to calculate longitudinal and angular vibrations (caused by periodic bit motions) along the drill string; field measurements made during actual ...

Drill String Vibration Mitigation During Simultaneous Drilling and Hole Enlargement

SPE/IADC Drilling Conference and Exhibition, 2009
Abstract Drill string vibrations (torsional, axial, and lateral uncontrolled movements) can create issues with equipment, drilling performance and wellbore quality. With respect to equipment, prolonged excessive drill string vibration exposure can lead to fatigue failure such as drill string ‘twist off’, downhole tool breakage, shorter ...

Inverse problems in drill-string torsional vibration

2020
In this study, a method is developed to better model drill-string torsional vibration by using data to calibrate a Partial Differential Equation (PDE) based model. Drill-string vibration is a complex phenomenon that is widely studied with several approaches to model the complexities encountered in real life.
