Natural Frequencies of Marine Drilling Risers
Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1976This paper gives the mathematical basis for determining natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes for marine drilling risers. Numerical results relate natural frequencies to riser parameters; the data cover risers operating within 600 ft of water. An approximate method is given for establishing marine-riser natural frequencies.

Study on Deepwater Drilling Riser Wear
Offshore Technology Conference-Asia, 2014Several riser wear accidents have occurred in offshore oil industry, which threaten offshore drilling safety and cause huge human, economy and environment losses. In 2012 and 2013, several deepwater exploration wells were accomplished in the South China Sea by CNOOC as the operator with the deepwater drilling unit HYSY981.

A New Fundamental Understanding of Gas in the Drilling Riser
Offshore Technology Conference, 2021Abstract The work described here originated from the tragic and ultimately environmentally catastrophic event at the Macondo well in April 2010. The first part of the paper addresses the causes for the sudden and often destructive ejection of hydrocarbons from a riser when a gas kick escapes timely detection.

Concentric Drilling Risers for Ultra Deepwater
IADC/SPE Drilling Conference, 1998Abstract Use of a higher pressure rated riser run inside the marine drilling riser would provide floating rigs with some advantages enjoyed by fixed rigs; the potential to drill underbalanced or near balanced, improved gas handling capability, improved well testing capability, expanded kick control capabilities and ...

Feasibility Study of Disconnectible Drilling Risers
Volume 3: Pipeline and Riser Technology; Ocean Space Utilization, 2008This study investigates the feasibility of an alternative deepwater drilling riser concept. The riser consists of two segments: a short upper segment suspending from a MODU, and a long freestanding lower segment that can be disconnected from the upper segment.

Field Operation of Drilling Marine Risers
Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1980Structural analysis techniques have been used since the 1950's to predict stresses in marine riser systems. However, little effort has been focused on the input design criteria, their interpretation, and field application. Taking into consideration the rig's characteristics, mooring capability, and riser system, this paper presents design and operating

Maximizing Drilling Riser Installation Operability for TLP Top Tensioned Risers
Volume 4B: Pipeline and Riser Technology, 2013Top tensioned risers (TTRs) are a key component in Dry Tree Tension Leg Platform (TLP) systems. TTRs are used for both production and drilling operations. The operability of the drilling riser system can be a key factor in the project economics.

Storm Disconnect Of Deepwater Drilling Risers
Offshore Technology Conference, 1979ABSTRACT Deepwater drilling risers are equipped with flotation to reduce the shipboard tensioning requirements. When such a riser must be disconnected and hung off due to severe weather, certain steps should be taken to protect it and the drilling vessel against damage.

Influence of the Riser Boost Line on the Thermal Stress of Riser in Deepwater Drilling
Materials Science Forum, 2019In deep water drilling, the existence of boost line makes the wellbore temperature change violently, and the thermal stress caused by it has a great influence on the strength of the riser. The paper considers the variable mass flow caused by the boost line fluid entering the wellbore during deepwater drilling.

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part M: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment
To address the large-deformation problem that may occur in a drill string–riser system under internal solitary waves (ISWs), a physical model is developed based on Hamilton’s principle, in which the coupled effects of ISWs, the drill string, drilling fluid, and the drilling riser are comprehensively considered.
