Biodiversity in drinking water distribution systems:a brief review [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
In drinking water distribution systems, three groups of living organisms are usually found in the biofilm and circulating water: heterotrophic bacteria, free-living protozoa, and macro-invertebrates.

Polydopamine‐Encapsulated Probiotics Restore Gut Homeostasis and Reinstate Macrophage Efferocytosis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Polydopamine‐encapsulated probiotics restore gut homeostasis and reinstate macrophage efferocytosis, thereby reestablishing immune tolerance and mitigating systemic autoimmunity, highlighting a bioengineered microbiota‐based therapeutic strategy for SLE.

Glucuronolactone Promotes Mucin Sulfation to Alleviate Deoxynivalenol‐Induced Intestinal Injury via Microbiota‐Dependent and ‐Independent AHR Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Glucuronolactone (GLU) as a natural metabolite of glucose, increases Lactobacillus amylovorus abundance and luminal IAA level to activate AHR signaling. In addition, GLU itself can directly elevate AHR signaling activity independently of microbiota and IAA.

Innovative Metasurface Colorimetric Cell‐on‐a‐Chip Sensor for Continuous, Label‐Free, Non‐Destructive Assessment of Intestinal Barrier Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We developed a real‐time, label‐free, high‐throughput cell‐on‐a‐chip system based on a metasurface plasmon resonance colorimetric sensor (MetaSPRCS) to evaluate intestinal barrier function. This platform enables continuous monitoring of cell adhesion, proliferation, and barrier layer formation, disruption, and repair.

Drinking Water

open access: yes, 2016
AbstractThis chapter examines the ongoing global struggle to supply potable drinking water to the world’s population. The chapter begins with a brief history of 20th century efforts to expand drinking water supply but argues that these efforts only resulted in partial successes.

Consolidation as a Regulatory Compliance Strategy: Small Drinking Water Systems and the Safe Drinking Water Act [PDF]

open access: yes
Despite extensive research and policy initiatives to increase the technical, financial, and managerial capacity of small drinking water systems, there has been little research focusing on understanding how consolidation can increase the overall capacity ...

Enhanced Photocatalytic Wastewater Purification and Bacterial Elimination via Copper Ion Irradiation‐Induced Modification of BiOCl

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a copper ion irradiation method to achieve the modification function of BiOCl. By using high‐energy ion beams to introduce impurity ions inside the material, the intrinsic electric field of BiOCl is optimized, promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and enhancing the photocatalytic activity.

ML Workflows for Screening Degradation‐Relevant Properties of Forever Chemicals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The environmental persistence of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) necessitates efficient remediation strategies. This study presents physics‐informed machine learning workflows that accurately predict critical degradation properties, including bond dissociation energies and polarizability.
