Comparative study of the cost and behavior of RC special moment frame buildings with drop and hidden beams subjected to seismic loads

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2022
This study presents a comparative analysis between two structural design ideas in the Ecuadorian construction market: hidden vs. drop beams. Due to its location in a high seismic zone, structural design considerations in Ecuador must be made with care ...

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Three-dimensional particle simulation of buried space formation process during high current gas metal arc welding

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Joining Processes, 2020
A drop transfer mode and a rotating transfer mode in high current gas metal arc welding named buried arc welding were modeled using a particle method that was suitable for numerical simulations of a fluid behavior with phase changes and large ...

Lessons Learned From a Delayed‐Start Trial of Modafinil for Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) is debilitating and has limited treatments. Modafinil modulates beta/gamma band activity in the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), like PPN deep brain stimulation. We therefore tested the hypothesis that Modafinil would improve FOG in PwPD.

Preventing market collapse in auctions for perishable Internet of Things resources

open access: yesInternational Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, 2017
We are entering the era of digital business moments where autonomous things will buy and sell services from each other in order to make people’s life easier. They will also negotiate in order to achieve the best price for their services which will result

Oblique Crashworthiness Analysis of Steel Circular Tubes: Parametric Study on Wall Thickness Effect and Critical Loading Angle Identification

open access: yesMachines, 2023
The current work studied the crashworthiness behavior of thin-walled circular steel tubes against axial and oblique crushing. Parametric analyses of crushing angle and tube wall thickness were conducted aiming to identify their effect on dissipated ...

Super‐Refractory Status Epilepticus (SRSE) in a Patient With Compound Heterozygous OPA1 Variants: Case Report and Literature Review

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Super‐Refractory Status Epilepticus (SRSE) is a rare, life‐threatening neurological emergency with unclear etiology in many cases. Mitochondrial dysfunction, often due to disease‐causing genetic variants, is increasingly recognized as a cause, with each gene producing distinct pathophysiological mechanisms.

Experimental and numerical investigation of lattice-walled cylindrical shell under low axial impact velocities

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Solids and Structures
This research was an experimental and numerical investigation of the cylindrical expanded Sheets under impact loading. Two types of absorbers with different cell angles were examined (i.e. α = 0 and α = 90).
